Hoosiers Honored for Academic Excellence

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana water polo team was recognized for its success in the classroom by the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA). IU earned the maximum number of athletes with seven. It marked the third time in school history that IU had seven players named. The Hoosiers also earned Team Honors from AWPCA for a team grade point average (GPA) over 2.75.
"It is a great honor for our program to be able to produce individuals that personify the term student-athlete," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We had our best year in the program's history, and it is nice to be able to top it off with academic recognitions. Our team's performance in the classroom is just another statement as to how we hold academics as a priority, and we are very proud of that accomplishment."
The Hoosiers had seven honorees in 2001 and in 2004. Over the last five years, the program has produced 29 All-American scholar athletes. The Hoosiers' team GPA also ranked among the top 20 in the country.
The AWPCA All-Academic team for individual athlete honors is divided into three different categories. The three levels are Excellent (3.2-3.4 GPA), Superior (3.41-3.7) and Outstanding (3.71-4.0). The qualification for CWPA All-Academic standing is that a player must be a starter or major contributor while also maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA.
Sophomore Kristin Zernicke earned the highest grade for the second straight year. She is only the second Hoosier to earn the distinction along with Molly Fonner, who was an Outstanding All-Academic team selection in 2002. Zernicke becomes the first to earn the honor two straight years.
The Hoosiers had a pair of Superior team representatives for the second consecutive season. Senior Kandace Waldthaler added her second All-Academic team honor and was named a third team AWPCA All-American in 2005. Junior Janis Pardy earned the honor for the second straight year as well. Seniors Jessica Goldner and Krista Peterson along with juniors Emily Schmitt and Bridget McKeon all were named to the Excellent All-Academic team. Goldner, Peterson and Schmitt each earned the third honors of their careers, while it was the first recognition for McKeon.
