Future Hoosier Tiffany Hockensmith Wins City Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Future Indiana Hoosier Tiffany Hockensmith claimed the 2005 Bloomington Herald Times City Women's Championship on Sunday at Cascades golf course. The Indiana recruit and Bloomington South grad won four of the last six holes to claim a 4-and-2 victory over Whitney Whaley, who was the tournament's defending champion.
"To finally stand on the podium is pretty cool," said Hockensmith. "I'm excited about the fall season at Indiana."
It marked Hockensmith's first-ever City Championship after finishing short the last two years.
It also was the end of what had been a hectic schedule during the month of July. Hockensmith's month began when she competed at the U.S. Amateur Women's Public Links on July 11-12 in Kansas City, Mo. She then had a terrific showing at the 82nd Indiana Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship, where she finished in a tie for fifth.
Indiana head coach Clint Wallman feels the tournaments and experience will only help Hockensmith as she prepares for play in the fall.
"It is great for her to win the title, defeating the defending champ in the process, and we couldn't be prouder," Wallman said. "I think her play this summer has given her a big boost of confidence. She has played against college-level players and that will only help her down the road when she competes at a higher level."
While at South HS, Hockensmith was tabbed the 2003 Mountain Dew Player of the Year and was one of eight females selected to the Tri-State Challenge team in 2003 and 2004. She competed well in many tournaments during her high school career, highlighted by capturing the 2003 Indiana Girls State Juniors championship, as well as winning the Plantations Junior Golf Tournament in 2004. Additionally, Hockensmith was a sectional medalist in 2003 and was named 2003 team MVP.
