Versatile Kirlew A Welcome Addition

Indiana linebacker/defensive end Jammie Kirlew was recently on campus for Freshman Orientation, and the 6-4, 235-pound linebacker sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to talk about his summer activities and how he eagerly anticipates his first year with the Cream and Crimson.
Kirlew brings impressive credentials with him to Bloomington. In addition to being 54th among The Orlando Sentinel's Top 100 prospects in the state of Florida, Kirlew played six positions (tailback, fullback, tight end, defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker) and was a second team all-state pick as a senior. Despite this versatility, Kirlew maintains the proper perspective heading into fall camp.
"Whatever gets me on the field," Kirlew replied when asked about his preference between defensive end or linebacker. "Having played three different offensive positions in high school, I know the basics of each one, which will help me be a better defensive player in college."
Following high school graduation in May, Kirlew has spent the last few months working out at Cypress Creek High School, and working at the Orlando Boys and Girls Club and at a local Target department store. He is anxious to strap on the pads when players report for fall camp on Aug. 7.
"I can't wait to get started," Kirlew said. "Look at the coaching staff. They're quality coaches who care about you. Coach Hoeppner had a great graduation rate at Miami (Ohio), and I know he is going to carry that over here."
Kirlew may be new to Bloomington, but he will have one familiar face on the sideline. Classmate Veryl "Neal" Jones, a 6-4, 240-pound defensive lineman from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, was an AAU basketball teammate of Kirlew's.
"Neal is a leader," Kirlew said. "He can have a big impact on the game, because he can do whatever he wants when he sets his mind to it."
Without a doubt, the Hoosiers are focused on the 2005 season, which will pay major dividends in the future.
