BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference released its annual Academic All-Big Ten selections for spring sports, and the Indiana men's golf team had eight members honored. This is the second straight year eight golfers have earned Academic All-Big Ten laurels, and the club's total is the highest among the 11 men's golf teams in the league.
Mike Birkenfeld, David Butwell, Oren Hodak, Brad Marek, Rob Ockenfuss, Jeff Overton, Scott Seibert and Andrew Temple each earned a spot on the team. Hodak, Ockenfuss and Overton picked up their third Academic All-Big Ten honors, while Marek and Seibert were honored for the second time. Birkenfield, Butwell and Temple secured the academic accolade for the first time in their careers.
Furthermore, Overton was one of six student-athletes to make the All-Academic team, as well as being named the league's Athlete of the Year in their respective sports.
Overall, Indiana boasted 93 representatives in 10 sports on the spring list. After 74 Hoosiers were honored in the fall and 27 in the winter, IU claimed a total of 194 student-athletes who were honored during the 2004-05 academic year by the conference.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Overall, the Big Ten Conference recognized 1,952 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2004-05 academic year, the highest total in the last 11 seasons, eclipsing the previous best of 1,896 set just one year ago.
