93 Hoosiers Recognized By Big Ten For Academic Excellence

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference released its annual Academic All-Big Ten selections for spring sports on Thursday, June 2. Indiana boasts 93 representatives in 10 sports on the spring list. After 74 Hoosiers were honored in the fall and 27 in the winter, IU claims a total of 194 student-athletes who were honored during the 2004-05 academic year by the conference.
In addition to Indiana's 93 honorees this spring, junior Jessica Gall was one of 13 student-athletes in the Big Ten to have maintained an unblemished GPA throughout the academic year. Furthermore, Jeff Overton was one of six student-athletes to make the All-Academic team, as well as being named the league's Athlete of the Year in their respective sports.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers in the classroom was the rowing team with 22 nominations followed by women's track and field with 16 and water polo with 11. In addition, the baseball and men's track and field teams claimed nine each.
Rounding out the Hoosier spring sports in number of Academic All-Big Ten honorees were men's golf (8), softball (7), women's tennis (5), men's tennis (4) and women's golf (2).
This spring, the Big Ten Conference recognizes a total of 943 spring and at-large sports student-athletes who have been named to the Academic All-Conference Team, the highest spring total in the last 11 years.
The list of honored student-athletes features 89 baseball players, 76 softball players, 115 women's rowing athletes, 39 women's and 34 men's golfers, 46 women's and 38 men's tennis players, 161 women's and 118 men's track and field athletes and 135 women's (representing water polo, ice hockey, fencing, synchronized swimming, lightweight rowing, lacrosse, pistol and rifle) and 92 men's (representing ice hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, fencing, rowing, pistol and rifle) at-large athletes.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Overall, the Big Ten Conference recognized 1,952 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2004-05 academic year, the highest total in the last 11 seasons, eclipsing the previous best of 1,896 set just one year ago.
