BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana assistant football coach Pete Compise, who spent 11 years as a color analyst on the University of Louisville football radio and television broadcasts, is joining the IU Radio Network in a similar capacity, IU Sports Properties General Manager Bob Agramonte announced today. Compise will join the veteran tandem of Don Fischer (play-by-play) and Joe Smith (pregame, halftime and postgame) for the Hoosiers' Sept. 2 season opener at Central Michigan and continue throughout the 2005 season.
After serving as an IU assistant coach from 1973-77, Compise is ready to return to Bloomington.
"It is exciting to be on the ground floor of this new era of IU Football," Compise said. "There is such a refreshing attitude around the program, and I could not be happier for the opportunity to work with Coach (Terry) Hoeppner and his staff and players."
Ironically, Compise's first year as an assistant (1973) marked Fischer's debut in Bloomington.
"What a pro," Compise said of Fischer. "He's a fabulous play-by-play man. I have respected him for many years."
The respect is mutual.
"Pete brings everything to the table that we were looking for," Fischer said. "Not only does he know the game of football, but he knows the broadcast business and he knows Indiana University. He will relate well to fans and be a great addition to the broadcasts."
A 1969 University of Louisville graduate and former fullback and placekicker on the Cardinal football team, Compise served as team captain in 1968 and earned the Senior Leadership Award in his final campaign. He converted 76 of 88 extra point attempts and scored 136 points in his collegiate football career, and he also was a two-year letterwinner in baseball. Following graduation, Compise spent one season as an assistant and two seasons as the head coach at Louisville Flaget High School. He directed Flaget to a 10-1-1 mark in 1971 and the Kentucky state co-championship. For his efforts, Compise was named Coach of the Year by the Louisville Quarterback Club.
Compise began his college coaching career as an assistant coach to Lee Corso at Louisville in 1972. The Cardinals posted a 9-1 mark and finished 14th in the nation that season.
Compise then followed Corso to Bloomington, where he served on the Hoosiers' staff from 1973 through 1976. Compise left IU in February, 1977 to be the head coach at Hanover College. He led Hanover to the 1979 and 1980 Hoosier Buckeye Conference championships and was a three-time conference Coach of the Year honoree.
Compise left Hanover in June 1982 to enter the restaurant business. He owned and operated Alexander's Restaurant in Louisville from 1982 to 1987 and Terrace Restaurant from 1987-1997. During this time, Compise also worked as a color analyst for Cardinal football telecasts on WDRB-Fox 41 in Louisville and on WHAS-840 AM for radio broadcasts.
Since 1997, Compise has worked in human resources and management for Maker's Mark Distillery and Thornton Oil Corporation in Louisville, and he is currently Senior Executive Recruiter for Executive Leadership Solutions, an executive search firm specializing in the retail industry.
Compise and his wife, Rhonda, reside in Henryville, Ind.
