Hoosiers Sign Quarterback Kellen Lewis

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kellen Lewis, who accounted for more than 2,600 yards and 24 touchdowns en route to Florida Class 6A District Two Player of the Year honors as a senior quarterback at Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin High School last fall, has signed a scholarship agreement to continue his academic and athletic career at Indiana University, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner said. Lewis will enroll at IU this August and will be immediately eligible to play for the Hoosiers.
The 6-3 ,185-pound Lewis, who also played cornerback in high school, runs a 4.64 40-yard dash and has a 33-inch vertical leap. Lewis comes from an athletic family, as his father, Kiser, played college football at Florida A&M before stints with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers, while his mother, Saprina, was an All-American track and field hurdler at Florida A&M.
Hoeppner gave much of the credit for Lewis' signing to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Troy Douglas.
"One of my adages is to have a plan, work a plan and plan for the unexpected," Hoeppner said. "When we had two quarterbacks decide recently that they did not want to play here, we continued to pursue Kellen. Troy Douglas did a great job staying in touch with him, and the end result is that we're fortunate to have a talented quarterback who is a solid student and a quality young man."
