Linebacker Kyle Killion enters his last preseason camp as a Hoosier. In 2004, Killion was a key component of IU's defense, recording 107 tackles with 16.5 of those for loss. Killion also grabbed a pair of interceptions and five sacks on the season.
This year, Killion moves back to his natural outside linebacker position after John Pannozzo's move to middle linebacker.
The second team All-Big Ten selection is keeping an online journal on IUHOOSIERS.com of his fourth and final preseason camp. Below is his fourth entry after Thursday's practice:
This morning was like the other mornings. I got up early, went to breakfast and went to meetings. We went over yesterday's practice on film. It's hard to think of the positives or the good things you did, because it's the negatives you need to concentrate on to correct.
I think John (Pannozzo) is playing well. He's all over the place out there. I'm trying to get there. I'm trying to make some plays here and there. I am a little frustrated right now, because I just want to make every play. I know it's a team defense, but I want to make the team better. There are still little things I need to understand in the defense. I think I'm still a little rusty, but I'll get there. Overall, I have a good feel for the defense and I know what's going on, I just need to get better and get use to the reps.
After meetings, we had a defensive walkthrough. At the walkthrough, we went over a few new things we put in today. I thought the schemes were real innovative.
After the walkthrough, I hit the books for some last minute studying and took my final. The final was pretty hard. I think I did alright, but the best part is now I can concentrate on football for the rest of the summer with a clear head. It was a big weight lifted off my shoulders.
After the final, I met up with some of the guys in the players' lounge. We talked and played some X-Box. It was good just to relax for a while.
I think as a team, we had another great practice. Today was hot. There were some people struggling. I drank one of those electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated. They aren't very good tasting, but I think it helped. I was dripping sweat after stretches, that's how hot it was.
Seven-on-seven went well for the defense again. We had some great picks. The defense has just been impressive all week. Now that we have some pads on, the defense is doing really well because we aren't so hesitant. Our secondary is doing outstanding. I rely on those guys back there to know what they are doing and they do. It's all about making the right breaks on the ball.
Up front, we had some good penetration. Russ (Richardson), Greg (Brown), Victor (Adeyanju) and Ben (Ishola) are doing a great job.
I am also impressed by our freshmen class. It's a great class, one of the best we've had since I've been here. I am really excited for these guys to be on my team. They are all-around good guys and good players. It's a good feeling to have when you are a senior to know that you are going to leave this program with guys that care about the team and who you know are going to do well. They want to learn, and they are going all out in practices.
