BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Continuing his sterling play this summer, Indiana men's golfer Brad Marek captured the title at the 75th Illinois State Amateur Golf Championship on Thursday at Crestwicke Country Club. The senior closed the four-round event with an even-par 71 to hold off Matt Miller by one stroke.
Marek, Miller and Mike Henry entered the final 18 tied atop the leaderboard, but Miller shot a 72 and Henry carded a 74 to finish in a tie for third with Nick Bova.
Marek finished the tournament with a 12-under 272 total and just missed tying the lowest winning total in the championship's history by one stroke. After an opening-round 68, Marek carded a remarkable 7-under 64 in round two before concluding with a 69 and 71.
Along with claiming the championship, Marek has had a successful summer. At the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in July, the All-America Scholar turned in a brilliant week of golf. Marek won three matches to advance to the quarterfinals of match play after tying for 22nd place following two rounds of stroke play.
