Batty and McGaffigan Capture ITA Doubles Crown

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan defeated the number four seed UNC's Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith, 8-3 to capture the doubles championship of the ITA's Summer Nationals.

The win gives Batty and McGaffigan a wild card bid to the esteemed Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., in October.

Batty and McGaffigan advanced to the finals of the doubles draw on Monday by upsetting the number one seed Allison Silverio and Whitney McCray of Georgia Tech, 8-5.

"I am really excited for Laura and I," Batty said. "It was a goal of mine to make it to California when I began this tournament. We had a great day and I am so happy for us."

The ITA All-American Doubles Championships consists of only 16 teams and is the most selective and prestigious collegiate tournament in the country. Batty and McGaffigan follow the likes of Hoosier greats, Deborah Edelman and Rachel Epstein in 1992, Edelman and Stephanie Reece in 1990 and the1988 champions Kelly Mulvihill and Reece, to compete in the ITA All-American Doubles Championship.

"It is such a great honor to get into the All-American tournament," head coach Loring said. "The tournament is 50% smaller than the NCAAs and is the most selective tournament of the year. I am really happy for both Sarah and Laura. It will be a great experience and a lot of fun for both of them."
