Big Ten Drops First Game To Huesca, 143-117

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior forward Marco Killingsworth collected 12 points and snared eight boards, but it was not enough as the Big Ten Foreign team opened its tour in Spain with a 143-117 defeat to Huesca on Saturday. Huesca, who claimed the Spanish third division championship last season, showed its long range capabilities by hitting 21 three-pointers on the evening.
After three days of sightseeing for the Big Ten conglomerates, the game was played in the Pyrenees Mountains in the town of Jaca - a four-hour bus trip from the team's hotel.
The Big Ten Foreign Tour team will play its games under international rules, meaning that the contests will be played with four, 12-minute quarters. After the opening period, the Big Ten team was down only by one, 33-32. But Huesca showed why it claimed the league championship, outscoring the Big Ten team 43-23 in the second stanza to take a 76-55 advantage into the lockerroom.
The Big Ten cut the Huesca lead to 14 near the end of the third quarter; however, thanks in large part to hitting 41 free throws on the night, that would be as close as the Big Ten would come, as the Spanish team cruised onto the victory.
Killingsworth was one of six players to reach double figures, and was one of two players on the team to grab a team-high eight rebounds.
The Big Ten contingent resumes competition against the VIC Barcelona Basketball Club on Monday, August 15. The future of the Big Ten is on display overseas as seven of the 12 players have completed two or fewer seasons of college basketball.
