BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Hoosier standout Josh Rife was named to the United Soccer League (USL) Second Division Team of the Week on Tuesday, May 3. Rife is currently in his third season with the Charlotte Eagles.
In 2005, Rife has started and played the full 90 minutes in the Eagles opening three victories. He has also helped anchor a defense that has shutout all three opponents to start the season.
Rife was joined on the Team of the Week by fellow Eagles Patrick Daka and Chris McClellan. McClellan was named the Second Division Player of the Week after recording three saves in a 5-0 victory over Harrisburg. The Eagles are 2-0-1 on the young season with wins over Virginia Beach (7-0) and Harrisburg to go along with a 0-0 tie versus Western Massachusetts. The Eagles will continue the 2005 season with matches on Friday, May 6, at the Northern Virginia Royals and a Saturday, May 7, contest at Harrisburg.
Rife transferred to IU after spending his first two collegiate seasons with Texas Christian University in 2000. In his two years as a Hoosier, Rife started all 46 matches at the back position and was a first team All-Big Ten selection in 2000 and 2001. The Cream and Crimson advanced to a pair of College Cups during those seasons, including a national runner-up performance in 2001. IU won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles in 2001 as well as the 2000 regular season championship.
The Denton, Texas, native was a first team NSCAA All-Region selection as a senior in 2001. The Hoosiers turned in the fifth-best single season goals against average in NCAA history during 2001, allowing just nine goals in 23 matches for a GAA of 0.37. Indiana also shutout 16 foes in 2001. During his two-year tenure with the Hoosiers, IU had a goals against average of 0.65 with 26 clean sheets.
