Hoosiers Continue To Excel In Summer Events

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's golfers Shannon Johnson and Elaine Harris continue the trend of what has been an outstanding summer for the IU women. Johnson, fresh off of her third consecutive South Dakota state championship, teamed with Allison Stewart to successfully defend their title at the South Dakota Golf Association Two-Women Team Championship at Hart Ranch Golf Course last weekend. In addition, Harris, a rising sophomore, collected a total of 11 birdies en route to winning the Pacific Women's Golf Association Championship at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Gilroy, Calif., with a two-round total of 146 (77-69),
The tandem triumph is the team's second straight title and third in four years. It was Johnson's eighth career SDGA title - she has won three straight Stroke Play Championships (2003-2005) and won back-to-back Junior Championships (1999-2000) - putting her in a tie for sixth on the all-time list. She is also only the fourth player in SDGA history to win two titles in the same year twice.
"I was kind of playing better the first couple holes and then Allison kind of took over on the back nine," Johnson said of the team's round on Saturday. "It was a pretty good partnership, as far as, we weren't birdying the same holes and I think we were reading the putts pretty well, so that kind of helped out."
Harris' victory marked the second year in a row that she has won the event. The title capped a summer of strong play by Harris on the California women's amateur circuit. The San Francisco, Calif., native also tied for eighth overall at the Northern California Golf Association's Inaugural Women's Championship, played at Poppy Hills GC, Pebble Beach, Calif., on July 12-13. In addition, she tied for ninth at the California Women's Championship on July 18-20 and reached the quarterfinals of the California Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship on May 16-20.
"Both Shannon and Elaine have had very solid performances in the events they have played this summer," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "This should give them some confidence heading into the school year and I will look for them to continue their good play."
