BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The rain subsided, the clouds parted and the sun came out as the Hoosiers took to the Memorial Stadium turf for practice Tuesday. The team practiced once on Tuesday sandwiched in between two-a-days on Monday and Wednesday. Indiana continued to prep for the season opener, which is only 17 days away in Mount Pleasant, Mich., against Central Michigan.
Special teams were on display at the start of practice. The place kickers took center stage on the north end of the field. The competition continues to heat up between freshman Joe Kleinsmith and redshirt freshmen Kevin Trulock and Austin Starr. Each had good attempts during the drill. Junior punter Tyson Beattie displayed good form consistently booting the ball over 40 yards. The Hoosiers also worked on the punt block as special teamers took aim at getting their hands and arms on kicks.
During 7-on-7 drills that focused mainly on the lines and rushing the football, senior back Chris Taylor had a couple of nice runs. Junior linebacker Jake Powers and senior linebacker Kyle Killion both made nice plays on separate series, stuffing the offense in the backfield.
Sophomore quarterback Blake Powers and junior signal caller Graeme McFarland had bright spots during 7-on-7 drills with receivers and defensive backs. Both found favorite targets during the drill as Powers consistently hit junior wide receiver Jahkeen Gilmore, while McFarland was finding freshman wideout Andrew Means.
The defensive also had some moments during the 7-on-7 drill. Senior Josh Moore created some pressure from his linebacker position. He stuffed a screen pass in the backfield, and put pressure on the quarterback, forcing a quick throw. Redshirt freshman linebacker Ryan Marando and defensive back Chris Phillips each had interceptions during the drill.
The Hoosiers will resume practice on Wednesday with the first of two at 9:15 a.m. The second practice of the day will begin at 4:30 p.m. Indiana will open the season at Central Michigan on Friday, Sept. 2. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. It also will be broadcasted on the IU Radio Network with Don Fischer (play-by-play), Pete Compise (analysis) and Joe Smith (pregame, post game and halftime).
