Freshman Jammie Kirlew just completed his first week of action in a Hoosier uniform. Kirlew has seen time at linebacker and with the defensive line, and turned in an impressive performance last week with a pair of fumble recoveries during 7-on-7 drills.
Entering week two, Kirlew is keeping an online journal on IUHOOSIERS.com of his first preseason camp. Below is his second entry after Tuesday's practice:
Today was a little different than yesterday. It was a Plan B schedule, and it was our first day in that routine. We started with an early breakfast and meetings. We then broke for lunch and came back for a full team meeting. In the special teams meeting, we talked about the new schemes we put in today. The defense is going to watch film tonight so we can see what corrections we have to make for tomorrow and how we can capitalize on those.
After meetings, we came out on to the field and started practice. We got a lot of individual work in today. We worked on the inside run a lot today, and we weren't actually hitting. The weather cooperated with us even though it started out a little hot.
Yesterday, I felt like I made a lot of mistakes, but today I really was able to come out and capitalize on those. I studied my mistakes and made sure I corrected them, and the coaches are happy with that. I looked a lot better than yesterday, but I still know there are mistakes I made today. I'm going to go back and do the same thing tonight as I did last night and study those mistakes and keep getting better.
Overall, today was a good day. The defense was on fire. We brought out the heat and stuck it to them. Everybody was excited and everybody came out ready to go. The defense dominated today, and we need to keep that up and be able to bring it again tomorrow.
