Canadian Women Lose to Slovenia

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Canadian National team faced Slovenia in their sixth match at the 2005 World University Games. In a contest that came down to the wire, Slovenia took the victory 49-48. Junior Sarah McKay recorded one steal in the loss.
From the very beginning, Slovenia held a commanding lead, going up 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Canada outscored Slovenia by two points, but were still trailing, 28-21 at the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Canada kept momentum on their side, outscoring Slovenia by two points, and closed the gap to a Slovenia lead of five points, 38-33. In the fourth quarter, Canada was able to close the lead to one point. In the last minute of play, the Canadian squad had two chances to take a one-point lead, but were unable to convert on both shots giving Slovenia the 49-48 victory.
Canada was able to find a way back into the game after some strong defensive play. A contribution of 21 points from the bench was also critical in the close final score.
Head Coach Stu Julius described the game as, "A very disappointing loss", but added that his squad, "Did an excellent job on defence and saw the bench put us back in the game."
