Hoosiers Take on Ball State in Preseason Exhibition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team opens its fall campaign with a preseason scrimmage against in-state rival Ball State this Sunday, Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. in Mellencamp Pavilion.
Head coach Amy Robertson returns 17 letterwinners from last season, including nine starters. Back in the Hoosier line-up is the 2004 third team All-Big Ten selection, Lydia Schrott and Kayla Bashore, who earned second team All-America honors in 2003 before redshirting the 2004 season. Schrott led the team in points (23), assists (11) and shots (49) last season. Also returning for Indiana Frederique Meeuwsen, who scored a season high 23 points and Morgan Miller, who tallied six goals and 13 points for the Hoosiers last season.
This is the second consecutive year the Hoosiers have faced the Cardinals in the preseason. In last year's scrimmage, Indiana rallied to a 3-3 tie after trailing 3-2 at the end of the second period.
In regular season action, Indiana and Ball State have met on six different occasions. The Hoosier/Cardinal series is currently tied at 3-3. Most recently, the two teams squared off on Sept. 3 in Bloomington, where IU dominated Ball State, 3-0 and recorded the team's first of three shutouts of the season. Nikki Orciuch, Schrott and Meeuwsen all scored for the Hoosiers while veteran goalkeeper Katie Kanara recorded three saves in the win.
The Hoosiers begin a tough four-game road series to open the 2005 season. Indiana travels to face New Hampshire on Aug. 27, Northeastern on Aug. 28, Appalachian State on Sept. 2 then to Wake Forest, the defending national champions. IU finally returns home to takes on Pacific on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.
