Throughout the history of Indiana baseball, a large contingent of Hoosiers has gone on to play at the professional level. There are currently 10 former IU standouts playing professional ball and in the upcoming weeks IUHOOSIERS.com will take a look at how each player is doing with their respective ballclubs.
After catching up with San Francisco Giants' farmhand Doug DeVore, Zach McClellan is up next. McClellan compiled a 16-5 record from 1998-2000 in Bloomington. He pitched in 41 games, starting 22 with five complete games and one save. In 159 1/3 innings, McClellan posted 111 strikeouts and a 4.58 ERA as a Hoosier.
McClellan is currently a pitcher for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Thus far in 2005, the 6'5 right-hander has appeared in 40 games, starting two of those contests. The Toledo, Ohio, native is 3-3 with 60 Ks in 65 innings pitched.
A fifth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2000, McClellan signed with the organization on June 12. He spent three years in the Royals' organization before being traded to the Rockies on April 9, 2004.
During his professional career, McClellan has appeared in 161 games with 110 starts, two complete games, one shutout and one save. He has produced 29 victories, a 4.12 ERA and 479 punchouts in 664 1/3 innings of work.
