Kirlew's Camp Journal: Day 5

Freshman Jammie Kirlew just completed his first week of action in a Hoosier uniform. Kirlew has seen time at linebacker and with the defensive line, and turned in an impressive performance last week with a pair of fumble recoveries during 7-on-7 drills.
Entering week two, Kirlew is keeping an online journal on IUHOOSIERS.com of his first preseason camp. Below is his final entry after Friday's practice:
Today we started off a little earlier than we have in the past. We went to team meetings and talked about what we needed to do today in order to have a good day tomorrow at the scrimmage.
Because of the storm last night, we played on the Memorial Stadium field. I think practice is a lot better when we are on this field, because it's more like game time, and I think people are more fired up. It feels good to be out here, because it's your home field.
We did a lot of individual drills, but we are trying to save legs for tomorrow so we can really come out strong and impress people. Today, I was really focused on pass rush and filling my gaps. I think I did a good job today. I just need to concentrate on getting off the ball a little quicker.
I am ready and excited for tomorrow's scrimmage. I'm ready to go out and hit some people. It's going to be live and although we've been practicing, I am ready for a real game where we can go all out. I think it's a big day for me, as well as for the team. There are going to be a lot of eyes on us.
Overall, we had a good day. I think we accomplished what we wanted to do in this practice. We have to talk a few more things through and take a look at our mistakes to perfect everything for tomorrow.
Throughout the whole week, I've seen a lot of guys stepping up and making some big plays. No one person has stuck out to me because we have done so well as a team. A lot of the freshmen have stepped up and proven that they are supposed to be here. Some of the receivers and defensive ends have really stepped it up, too. I've seen the offensive line as a whole get better this week. Those guys are working hard at making it impossible to get past them and to the quarterback. The quarterbacks have all gotten better, as they've gotten more comfortable. Everyone has honestly taken the time to get better and has improved.
Camp, as a whole, went well for me. I have a passion for football, I love football, and I can't get tired of it. I think camp has had a lot of wear and tear on my body, but it's worth it in the end.
I am looking forward to classes. I am a good student, so I am ready for that aspect of being here. I am eager to see how the adjustment of football and school goes. I've heard about how difficult it can be, but I have good time management so I am ready to start, as well as get the season underway.
