College Soccer News Honors Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - College Soccer News recognized seven different Indiana men's soccer players on a pair of preseason watch lists. Juniors Jed Zayner and Jacob Peterson were both named second team Preseason All-Americans, while five incoming freshmen were named to CSN's Top 100 Freshmen to Watch in College Soccer. Those five include goalkeeper Chay Cain, midfielder Brad Ring, defender Chris Schuler and forwards Lee Nguyen and Darren Yeagle.
Peterson was a first team All-Big Ten and third team NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region in 2004. He led the Hoosiers with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists a season ago. Over the summer, Peterson played with the Under-20 United States National Team at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland.
Zayner returns to the Hoosiers after earning second team All-Big Ten honors a season ago. The Orland Park, Ill., native has been the starting center back for a Hoosier defense that has a goals against average of 0.63 with 22 shutouts in winning back-to-back national titles. In each of his first two seasons, Zayner was named to the College Cup All-Tournament team.
The Hoosiers were one of four teams to have two representatives among College Soccer News three Preseason All-America teams. The other schools included UNC-Greensboro, UCLA and Duke.
The five Hoosier freshmen to earn the distinction are part of a Hoosier group that was ranked the top incoming freshmen class in the country by College Soccer News and StudentSportsSoccer.com, a Rivals.com website. Cain, Ring, Schuler, Nguyen and Yeagle were all named to the prestigious PARADE Magazine All-America Team as high school seniors.
The Hoosiers opened the exhibition schedule with a 1-1 tie against No. 9 (NSCAA) UCLA as part of the IPFW Soccer Showcase on Aug. 19. IU will complete the exhibition slate with a match up against Illinois-Chicago on Aug. 27. The game time is set for 7:30 p.m. on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana opens the regular season against a loaded field at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The Hoosiers will welcome No. 7 SMU, No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 16 Notre Dame to Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium for the 23rd annual event. Indiana will take on Wake Forest on Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Notre Dame and SMU will open the Classic at 5 p.m. On Sept. 4, Wake Forest will take on Notre Dame at noon before the Hoosiers face SMU at 2 p.m.
