Peterson, Hoosiers Recognized by Soccer America

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The two-time defending national champion Indiana men's soccer team reeled in some recognition from Soccer America during the preseason. The Hoosiers earned their third Preseason No. 1 ranking, while junior forward Jacob Peterson was named to the magazine's preseason All-America list.
Indiana held down the top spot in the Soccer America Preseason Top 25, joining College Soccer News and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in recognizing the Hoosiers. IU was also Soccer America's top choice during the preseason in 2004.
Six Hoosier opponents for 2005 are among the Soccer America Top 25, including No. 4 Maryland, No. 8 SMU, No. 17 Northwestern, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 19 Notre Dame and No. 22 Cal State-Northridge.
IU's exhibition opponent from Aug. 19, UCLA, was ranked No. 2 in the Soccer America poll. The Hoosiers and Bruins played to a 1-1 draw as part of the IPFW Soccer Showcase. Redshirt freshman Kevin Noschang scored in the first half for the Hoosiers off an assist from Peterson. For the match, IU outshot the Bruins, 14-8.
Peterson' selection to the Soccer America Preseason All-America Team marked the second time he has been honored this season. The Portage, Mich., native was selected a College Soccer News preseason second team All-American, along with junior defender Jed Zayner. The Soccer America Preseason All-America Team listed the 11 players the publication considered to be the best in college soccer.
IU will see its first action at home during the 2005 season on Saturday night, Aug. 27. The Hoosiers will complete their exhibition schedule with a match up against Illinois-Chicago at 7:30 p.m. on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana opens the regular season against a loaded field at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The Hoosiers will welcome No. 8 SMU, No. 18 Wake Forest and No. 19 Notre Dame to Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium for the 23rd annual event. Indiana will take on Wake Forest on Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Notre Dame and SMU will open the Classic at 5 p.m. On Sept. 4, Wake Forest will take on Notre Dame at noon before the Hoosiers face SMU at 2 p.m.
