Indiana Travels East For Season Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers open the 2005 season on the road against the New Hampshire Wildcats then the Northeastern Huskies. Indiana is coming off of its best season in the program's short six-year history. Indiana concluded the 2004 campaign with a 12-8 record and its second consecutive winning season under head coach Amy Robertson. The 2005 team will look to veteran leadership from the squad's six returning seniors.
The Hoosiers welcome back 17 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from the previous year. Returning for the Hoosiers is Kayla Bashore, who was sidelined with injuries last season. Bashore, who has taken 102 shots and scored 29 points and seven assists in her career, will be a welcomed return for Indiana.
Assisting Bashore in what hopes to be another benchmark year is junior Lydia Schrott and sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen. Schrott earned third team All-America honors last year and tallied 23 points for the Hoosiers. As a freshman, Meeuwsen contributed 23 points to the scoring offense as well.
This season will bring more scoring and more excitement than in year's past. With a solid core of scorers and defenders returning coupled with three outstanding freshmen in Castro, Kiper and Manson, the Hoosiers go into the season with the strongest team they have ever had.

This is the third time the Hoosiers have started the season on the road. In season openers on the road, Indiana is 1-1. Indiana has won two of its last three season openers.
Scouting the Opponents
New Hampshire opens its 2005 campaign against the Hoosiers. The Wildcats are coming off a 4-16 season with a 2-4 mark in the America East Conference. Their 2-4 league record was good enough for a sixth-place finish. Like Indiana, the Wildcats are returning a battery of letterwinners. Ten letterwinners, 11 newcomers and two red shirt freshmen are back for New Hampshire. The Wildcats were picked third in the preseason America East Coaches Poll.
Team captain Kaitlyn Skelley, who recorded 14 points in seven goals, returns for her final season as a Wildcat, along side fellow captain Katie White (12 points, 6 goals) and junior Emily Colton. Colton racked up nine points, one assist and four goals in 2004.
Northeastern enters its first year in the Colonial Athletic Conference, leaving behind the America East Conference in which they won their fourth-straight title in 2004. Last year, the Huskies record was 18-4 overall and 5-1 at home. The Huskies return a pair of talented seniors in Lauren Edelmeier (14 points, 8 assists) and Jay Quinn (20 points, 4 assists). Additionally, Edelmeier was named the America East Defensive Player of the Year. The Huskies also return junior leading scorer Whitney Shean who logged an impressive 35 points in 2004, with 23 of those points coming in the last ten games.
The Series
The last time the Hoosiers and Wildcats met was on October 9, 2004 in Evanston, Ill. Behind freshman Kate O'Connell's goal in the 51st minute, the Indiana field hockey team was victorious, 2-1, and notched the team's eighth win of the season. In the 31st minute of action, Lesley Wiler registered the first goal of the game off an assist from Meredith Brown. New Hampshire's only point came off a penalty corner from MacKenzie Stuart in the 44th minute. For the game, IU out-shot the Wildcats, 14-8. Senior goalkeeper Katie Kanara had two saves in the win.
This will be the first meeting between the Hoosiers and the Northeastern Huskies.
The Last Hoosier Outing
The Hoosiers took the field for the first time in 2005 in their only exhibition match of the preseason. In three 25-minute periods of play, the Hoosiers out-scored the Ball State Cardinals, 3-0. Goals were tallied by sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen, senior Mallory Reabold and freshman Katie Kiper. Sophomores Kate O'Connell and Amanda Oyler and junior Lydia Schrott were credited with the assists. The Hoosiers out-shot the Cardinals, 22-2, and freshman Jobi Manson had one save in the preseason win.
Bashore Eyes the U.S. National Team
The Hoosier line-up welcomes back fifth-year senior, Kayla Bashore. Bashore used last season as her redshirt year to concentrate on her studies and the MCATS.
Currently, the Shoemakersville, Pa., is practicing with the USA National Team in Virginia Beach, Va. as a possible member of their roster. Bashore will fly to Virginia Beach, Va. to practice with the squad.
Hoosiers Welcome a Trio of Newcomers
Head coach Amy Robertson and the Hoosiers welcome three talented additions to the 2005 roster.
San Diego, Calif., native Danitra (Dani) Castro becomes a Hoosier after her impressive career at Scripps Ranch High School. Katie Kiper joins the squad in the forward position. Kiper led her Sacred Heart Academy team to back-to-back state runner-up finishes. Severna Park, Md., native Jobi Manson is a much welcomed goalkeeper. Manson recorded 183 saves in her high school career, and is a talented surfer. The three will add tremendous depth to the 2005 Hoosier line-up.
Who's Next?
Indiana continues its four-game road trip with Appalachian State on Sept. 2 and the defending National Champions, Wake Forest on Sept. 4.
