BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On the strength of two second-half goals, the Indiana women's soccer team closed out the spring season with a perfect 9-0 mark, after a 2-0 shutout over 2004 Big 12 champion Kansas this past Sunday, April 24.
"It was the first time this spring that we played a match like it was in season," said assistant coach Ian Rickerby. "We played a lot of the spring games with the mentality to win, but we wanted to get everybody playing time and see what they can do. But, just like last year with our win over North Carolina, we wanted to close out the spring like it was the regular season."
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Megan Pipkens gave IU a 1-0 lead, taking a cross from the right side by classmate Carrie DeFreece. Pipkens then headed the ball between the posts for the score.
"It was a great header by Pipkens," said head coach Mick Lyon. "It is something that we want to see more off in the fall."
DeFreece added her second assist of the game, feeding a cross from the left into the box. Junior Kristen Zmijewski took control of the ball and passed it to freshman Kristin Radcliffe, who notched her sixth goal of the spring campaign.
"Zmijewski has played great in the spring, taking over for Kim (Grodek) as a leader on the team," said Lyon. "Kristin (Radcliffe) has continued to score goals and I look for the same when we get back in August."
Sophomore Stacey Van Boxmeer was superb again in between the pipes, stopping two Kansas scoring efforts from point-blank range. Van Boxmeer did not allow a goal during the eight-game spring season.
"I believe that this will really give us a lot of momentum when we come back in August for the 2005 season," said Lyon. "We had a lot of players step us this spring and that will only help us in the fall."
Indiana opens the 2005 season with home exhibition matches against Memphis (Aug. 19) and Valparaiso (Aug. 21). The official season gets underway with a trip to Los Angeles, Calif., as the Hoosiers participate in the USC Tournament. IU will face Loyola Marymount on Friday, Aug. 26, and host USC on Sunday, Aug. 28.
The Cream and Crimsons first home action will be on Sept. 9, with the Hoosier Classic. Indiana will square off against Miami at 7 p.m. IU will then face Xavier in the tournament finale on Sunday, Sept. 11.
