BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Just because it's not the fall doesn't mean the Indiana women's soccer team is not working on its game. This past Saturday, Feb. 27 the Hoosiers hosted an Indoor Tournament at the John Mellencamp Pavilion.
"We have been doing a lot of individual workouts, and we had about six team training sessions so it was a great weekend for us to get out and play as a team," said head coach Mick Lyon. "It is also good to see the club teams from a recruiting standpoint as well as they get a chance to play in front of a few college programs."
The tournament featured three other Division I programs in Ball State, Butler and Indiana State, as well as five club teams. Each game consisted of two 25-minute periods.
The Cream and Crimson won all three of its games. IU opened the event with a 1-0 win over the Carmel Crossfire. The lone goal was scored by junior captain Kristen Zmijewski. Indiana then blanked Ball State 1-0, as freshman Kristen Radcliffe kicked in the game-winner. IU went for the trifecta against the Heat, coming away with a 2-1 victory. Sophomores Ali Brown and Shannon Vnoucek tallied the goals in that game.
"We really only lose one scholarship player from last year so everything we work on will go a long way to preparing for next season as all 19 players saw a lot of action," said Lyon. "It is also a good chance for some players who didn't get much playing time last year to step up and show us their abilities. Stacey (Van Boxmeer) redshirted last year due to playing with the Canadian National Team and it was good to see her back out there for us with three scoreless halves. Shannon (Vnoucek) also had a good weekend striking the ball and scoring a goal for us."
The Indiana soccer team would like to thank all the teams who came in to play, and hope they had a great time in this informal event.
The Cream and Crimson will continue its preparation in the next couple of weeks. Indiana will next play a pair of road scrimmages against Louisville on March 25, and St. Louis on April 3. IU's next home event will be on April 10, as the Hoosiers host the Outdoor Round Robin at Armstrong Stadium. The event will feature Austin Peay, Cincinnati, Southern Indiana, Valparaiso and the Heat Club Team.
