Program-Best Four Hoosiers Named All-Conference

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Collegiate Water Polo Association honored a quartet of Hoosiers as all-conference selections on Friday night at the Eastern Championship Banquette. Seniors Krista Peterson, Kandace Waldthaler and Jessica Goldner all returned as all-conference choices, while freshman Carolyn Conway earned the first accolade of her career. Peterson, Waldthaler and Conway were first team CWPA All-Western Division selections, while Goldner was a second team honoree. The three first team selections and four all-conference choices were the most in school history.
For the third consecutive season, Peterson earned first team All-Division honors. She was a first team All-Southern Division selection in 2003 and then an All-Western Division pick a season ago. The Portland, Ore., native has also been an honorable mention American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) All-America selection each of the last two seasons.
Peterson leads the Hoosiers with 51 goals on the season. She became only the second Hoosier to record 50 or more goals each of her four years at Indiana. The 2005 tri-captain is also tied for the team lead in hat tricks with six, while ranking third in assists (24) and fourth in kickouts earned (12). Peterson ranks second on the Hoosiers career goals (222) and assists (115) lists.
Goldner earned the third All-Division accolade of her career as the second team All-Western Division goalkeeper in 2005. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., product was the second team All-Southern Division goalkeeper in 2003 and the second team All-Western Division goalkeeper last season.
Goldner ranks among the national leaders in saves with 205 on the season. She has played in 27 matches, while making 25 starts. The 2005 tri-captain has a goals against average of 6.26 on the year with 10 double-digit save performances. She will leave IU as the program's all-time leader in saves (876) and shots faced (1979). Goldner was named the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week after her performance at the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 12-13, earlier this season.
Waldthaler made it two-for-two in her Hoosiers career, earning first team All-Western Division honors for the second straight season. She transferred to IU after spending her first two collegiate years at Sierra College, a two-year community college in northern California.
The Fairfield, Calif., native leads the Hoosiers in kickouts earned (51), hat tricks (6) and four-meter penalty goals (5) on the year. She also ranks second on the team in goals with 46. In just two seasons, Waldthaler ranks 10th on the Hoosiers career goals list (87). The 2005 tri-captain was named the Western Division Player of the Week on a pair of occasions this season following the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 29-30, and the Gaucho Invitational, Feb. 25-27.
Conway became the first Hoosier freshman to earn first team CWPA All-Division honors in school history. The former Southern California high school player of the year ranks third on the team in goals (40) and hat tricks (5). She also ranks second on the team with 40 kickouts earned and is tied for the team lead in four-meter penalty goals (5).
The Hoosiers have enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in the program's eight-year history. The Cream and Crimson are 22-9 on the year, marking the seventh season in which the Hoosiers have won 20 or more games. Indiana also won the regular season Western Division title for the first time in the school's annals with a perfect 7-0 mark.
IU reached its highest ranking in school history, coming in at No. 6 on Feb. 16 and 23. The Hoosiers reached the height after knocking off a pair of top 10 opponents (then-No. 6 California and then-No.7 Hawaii) on the same day (Feb. 12) at the Stanford Invite. The Hoosiers also knocked off a school-record five top 10 programs this season.
Indiana will look for the second CWPA Eastern Championship in school history this weekend. The Cream and Crimson host the Eastern Championship on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. The Hoosiers are the top seed at the championship and will play eighth-seeded George Washington at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The semifinals are set for 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night. The championship match will be played at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of the CWPA Eastern Championship will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich., May 13-15. Tickets for the Eastern Championship will be available at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on the days of competition.
