Waldthaler Named Third Team All-American

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Kandace Waldthaler became the third Hoosier in school history to the named an All-American with her third team selection by the American Water Polo Coaches Association. She was one of only three players from the East Coast to be named to one of the top three teams in the nation. Waldthaler joined a list of Hoosier All-Americans that includes Kristin Stanford (2001, 2002, 2003) and Krista Peterson (2003, 2004).
"Kandace was very deserving of this honor," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "She was a force for us offensively and demonstrated that by capping her career with four-straight hat tricks. We are proud of Kandace. She represented IU in the best fashion both in the pool and in the classroom."
Waldthaler led the Hoosiers in goals (55), hat tricks (9), kickouts earned (55) and four-meter penalty goals (5). In just two seasons with the Cream and Crimson, Waldthaler ranks ninth on the Hoosiers' career goals list with 96 markers. She transferred to IU after spending her first two collegiate years at Sierra College, a two-year community college in northern California
"Being an All-American has been a goal of mine for a long time," Waldthaler said. "I was really surprised to be recognized as one. Thursday (May 19) was my birthday, so it was a nice present. I think it is a reflection of how well we did as a team. It is an honor to be recognized."
In her two seasons with Indiana, Waldthaler earned first team CWPA All-Western Division honors. The 2005 tri-captain was also named the Western Division Player of the Week on a pair of occasions this season following the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 29-30, and the Gaucho Invitational, Feb. 25-27.
The Hoosiers enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in the program's eight-year history. The Cream and Crimson finished with a record of 24-10, marking the seventh season in which the Hoosiers have won 20 or more games. It was the second-highest win total in school history, falling two wins shy of the school record of 26 set in 1998 and 2003. Indiana also won the regular season Western Division title for the first time in the school's annals with a perfect 7-0 mark.
IU reached its highest ranking in program history, coming in at No. 6 on Feb. 16 and 23. The Hoosiers reached the height after knocking off a pair of top 10 opponents (then-No. 6 California and then-No.7 Hawaii) on the same day (Feb. 12) at the Stanford Invite. The Hoosiers also knocked off a school-record five top 10 programs this season. Indiana finished the year ranked 10th in the national top 20. It marked the second time in three seasons the Hoosiers finished the year ranked in the top 10.
