Indiana Begins Season with New Hampshire and Northeastern

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosier field hockey team kicks off its 2005 season with New Hampshire on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. (EST) in Durham, N.C., before taking on Northeastern in Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. (EST). Indiana looks to improve upon its 2-3 record in season openers with a win over the Wildcats.
The Hoosiers have already started the season strong with a dominating 3-0 win over Ball State in last Saturday's scrimmage. The Hoosiers came out firing and out-shot the Cardinals 22-2 in three 25-minute periods. Senior Mallory Reabold, sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen and freshman Katie Kiper all registered goals in the preseason victory.
The Hoosiers are eager to see how they stack up in the regular season against two strong opponents.
Indiana, who faced New Hampshire for the first time in 2004, defeated the Wildcats, 2-1, off Kate O'Connell's game-winning goal in the 51st minute. New Hampshire is coming off of a 4-16 season.
"We played New Hampshire last year on a neutral site when they were going through a down part of their season, but they have a strong lineup returning this year, and I know they are really hungry," head coach Amy Robertson said. "I think it's going to be a great matchup and a great game for both of us."
This is the first meeting between Indiana and Northeastern. 2005 marks the inaugural season for the Huskies in the Colonial Athletic Conference after years of domination in the America East. Under 18-year veteran coach, Cheryl Murtagh, the Huskies tallied a 18-4 overall record and her tenth America East crown last season.
"We have never played Northeastern, so it is always exciting to play someone new," Robertson said. "They had a few significant losses and quite a few talented freshmen coming in, so you really can't tell what kind of team they are going to have out there. We have a good idea about their style of play, but it will be a good time to focus on ourselves and how we are going to achieve success down the road."
The Hoosiers continue their road series with Appalachian State and Wake Forest next weekend. Indiana makes its way to Boone, N.C., to face the Mountaineers at 6 p.m. (EST) and then to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on the defending national champion Demon Deacons on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. (EST).
