BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team was unable to overcome the Loyola Marymount (0-0-1) defense during its 110-minute match tonight on Sullivan Field in Los Angeles, Calif. Indiana (0-0-1) ran with the Lions for two regulation and two sudden-death overtime periods, but was forced to call the match at 0-0.
While the team was unable to score, it proved tough as a group keeping the Lions from getting the better of the Hoosier defense.
"Overall it's a solid season opener," head coach Mick Lyons said. "It was a tough start for us to come on the road and play a good team. One thing that we did great was not break down defensively. While LMU got behind us on some occasions, which you expect with a great team, we dodged those opportunities and were able to hold them scoreless."
The Hoosiers finished the match with seven shots against the Lion's defense, while Loyola was able to reel off 18 on the night.
"Stacey Van Boxmeer and Lauren Fabbro did a good job of protecting goal," Lyon said. "There were some opportunities that we got a little worried about, but they got in there and were able to scoop up the ball and breakup the scoring threat. "
The match became very physical throughout the long night, with three yellow cards being shown, two of which belonged to IU players.
The Hoosiers got valuable minutes from its bench, as well as its starters, with both units applying offensive pressure over the stretch of the match. Leading the Hoosiers was sophomore Lindsay McCarthy with two shots, followed by senior Kristen Zmijewski, sophomores Kristin Radcliffe and Suzie Teixeira, freshmen Molly Kruger and Ashley Seib with one shot apiece.
Pulling in six saves on the night was sophomore goalie Van Boxmeer through 65 minutes of action, while senior Fabbro closed out the night in front of IU's goal with four saves over 45 minutes.
The Hoosiers will return to action with its final California matchup against No. 18 Southern California on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1p.m., on McAlister Field in Los Angeles, Calif.
