Freshman Diary #1

- My name is Molly Kruger and I am a freshman on the Indiana women's soccer team. Throughout the season I hope to give everyone a chance to see what it takes to be Hoosier soccer player, along with a glimpse into my daily life on the team. There are many reasons of why I came to Indiana, but the main one is the quality of talent and personalities of the women on the team. I hope to feature all of those qualities throughout the year as I take you through the 2005-06 season.

-Journal Entry #1-
The team set out to Los Angeles, Calif., the city of fame, early on Thursday morning for its first matches of the season at Loyola Marymount and Southern California.

With all that in mind, I made sure to stay to focused on the real reason for our trip, competing and playing some quality soccer against some good teams. Friday, we took on the Lions of Loyola Marymount, a game that ended in a 0-0 tie. It was nice to face such a quick and talented squad, something that helps challenge us as a team and prepare us for the season. After playing a full game, 110 minutes to be exact, we had most of the day off on Saturday to spend together with the team or with our family.

I was blessed to spend most of Saturday with my brother and sister who live in California. The majority of the team participated in a tour through Hollywood. visiting the stars' homes and other sites around the area.

While I don't want people to think I was not there to play soccer, I could not pass up a chance to do some shopping. I shopped and saw the sites most of the afternoon on Saturday, not to mention got a killer steal on a pair of 7 jeans. Yeah for vintage clothing!

Saturday night, the team ate dinner together at the California Pizza Kitchen in downtown Los Angeles. The team was treated to a great meal, which started off with hummus, spinach and artichoke dip, followed by the main entrée of cheese pizza. Needless to say, the coaching staff feeds us well!

Sunday, we played nationally ranked USC. The result was not as planned, but a good learning experience for sure. As the coaching staff continues to say, "In wins or losses, file that game away for later use." In other words, you should always be learning from what happens. Do not dwell on what happened, good or bad, learn from it and move on.

We had six hours to kill before our flight back to Bloomington, Ind., so we journeyed to the third street promenade in Santa Monica, Calif. There were shops galore. I bought a fun pair of mint green Chuck Taylor's, which are something that I have always wanted, not to mention they were on sale!
