BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team is set to take on Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 2 in Boone, N.C. then Wake Forest on Sunday, Sept. 4 in Winston-Salem. The Hoosiers, who are coming off of two big road wins, are up for the challenge once again and hope to return to Indiana with a 4-0 record.
Coach's Corner
Head coach Amy Robertson on Appalachian State:
"They are a very good squad right now. They return a lot of good players. I respect their coaching staff tremendously, and I know they will be ready for us. We are at their home and that will make it even tougher. We have to play our game for the entire 70 minutes."
On Wake Forest:
"Having been an assistant coach at Wake, I have great respect for their program and coaches. There is a lot of history there. They have three national championships and a ton of tournament experience. We have nothing to lose against Wake Forest, and I believe it's going to be a great game. I know our team is going to give it everything they've got. We know we are ready, and we need to go into the game and focus on our strengths and execute. This game will bring out the best in our team. These girls have been waiting for this game for two and three years."
Scouting the Opponents
Appalachian State notched a 6-14 season under second-year head coach Mandy Latz. The Mountaineers return 13 letterwinners, including six starters. ASU is coming off a 1-1 road trip to Colgate and Siena to open its season. The Mountaineers lost in overtime to Colgate and narrowly escaped Siena, Appalachian State will continue to rely on its defense led by goalkeeper Kate Ryno. Andrea Lee and Erica Muschamp are the two strongest scorers for ASU. Both scored goals in the loss to Colgate.
The Demon Deacons were 20-3 in last year's national championship run. Wake Forest loses seven starters and 12 letterwinners from last year including three-time All-American and ACC Female Athlete of the Year, Kelly Dostal. The Demon Deacons defeated two tough Big Ten opponents in its last outings at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Iowa City, Iowa. Wake beat Iowa 2-0 in their season opener with freshman Christine Suggs and senior Kelly Wood tallying goals. Against Michigan, the Demon Deacons were victorious again with scores coming from junior Kristi Harshman and freshman Michelle Kasold. Goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi was credited with five saves for the weekend. None of 2004's top scorers for Wake Forest scored in the opening weekend.
The Series
The last time the Hoosiers and Mountaineers met was on Sept. 11, 2004 in Bloomington. Indiana posted a 4-0 shutout win over Appalachian State and dominated the match from start to finish on both sides of the field as IU recorded 23 shots, including 13 on goal to ASU's five. The Hoosiers tallied goals from Morgan Miller, Nikki Orciuch, Lesley Wiler and Mallory Reabold.
The last time the Hoosiers and the Demon Deacons met was on Nov. 1, 2003 in Iowa City, Iowa. Despite upsetting Iowa in double overtime the day before, Indiana fell 6-0 to the top-ranked Deacons.
The Last Time Out
The Hoosiers opened the 2005 season with a pair of wins in the Northeast. The Hoosiers defeated New Hampshire, 3-1, before topping the Huskies of Northeastern the next day, 3-2.
Against Northeastern, forward Lydia Schrott scored all three goals for the team. Senior Lesley Wiler was credited with an assist in Schrott's first goal. Schrott scored three goals and only took four shots on Sunday.
What's Next?
Indiana opens the season at home against Pacific on Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., in Mellencamp Pavilion.
