Swander to Defend 100 LCM Breast National Title

IRVINE, Calif. - Rising junior Kevin Swander advanced to the championship final in the 100 LCM breaststroke event at the 2005 ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships in Irvine, Calif., on Aug. 6. The performance put the Greenwood, Ind., native in line to defend his national title from last year in the event.
In preliminary action, Swander posted the fourth-fastest time of qualifying with a 1:03.05. That effort now stands as the eighth-best 100 LCM breaststroke time in IU history. Meanwhile, incoming freshman Heath Tameris earned a spot in the consolation final with a 10th-place 1:04.08, while fellow recruit A.J. Miller claimed 27th in 1:05.29.
In the 100 LCM backstroke, rising freshman Ben Hesen notched a 38th-place effort. The Jeffersonville, Ind., native touched in 58.42 to improve his own sixth-best time in school history. Additionally, rising junior Mike Jones placed 63 with a time of 59.99, while rising sophomore Scott Tanner wound up in 74th in 1:01.30. That performance vaulted the Loveland, Ohio, product up to 13th on IU's list in the event.
In the 400 LCM freestyle, rising sophomore Ryan McNeill finished in 50th with a time of 4:03.85, while rising freshman Alex Brunfeldt picked up 69th in 4:09.69.
In the 100 LCM butterfly, Tanner recorded the fifth-fastest clocking in school history to garner a berth in the bonus consolation final. He touched in 55.03 for the 19th-best time of the morning session. Meanwhile, Hesen improved to sixth on IU's 100 LCM fly chart with a 65th-place 57.11, while rising junior Thomas Clavier tied Hesen with a 57.11 of his own.
