BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the season opener less than one month away, the Indiana football team checked into the University Plaza Hotel to report for its first preseason camp under head coach Terry Hoeppner on Sunday afternoon. After a day of meetings and housekeeping, the Hoosiers will return to the field for its first practice on Monday.
From the fifth-year seniors to the true freshmen, there is a buzz and excitement surrounding the program. Everyone is ready to hit the gridiron to prepare for the opener in Mount Pleasant, Mich., against the Central Michigan Chippewas on Sept. 2 (7:30 p.m. EST on ESPNU).
Seniors Adam Hines (offensive lineman), Buster Larkins (defensive back), Isaac Sowells (left tackle) and freshmen Neal Jones (defensive lineman) and Matt Lewis (linebacker) shared their thoughts on the upcoming training camp and season.
Senior Offensive Lineman Adam Hines
On reporting to camp:
"I'm excited and can't wait to get going. I'm ready to strap on the pads and kick off a good year."
On his senior season:
"It's my last season, and it's my last shot. I'm anxious to get out there and have the opportunity to bring a winning tradition back to IU."
Senior Left Tackle Isaac Sowells
On reporting to camp:
"I've been waiting for this moment since suffering my injury (versus Michigan State last season). Going to camp and getting ready for Central Michigan, I just can't wait to get back on the field."
On his senior season:
"It is such a wonderful thing to get to play one more season. I hope we can make it a memorable one. We're going to try our best and play to the best of our ability."
Senior Defensive Back Buster Larkins
On reporting to camp:
"I've got goosebumps. I'm anxious to get to camp and play for Coach Hep. I can't wait. Last time we put on pads was during the spring game, and we had a ball out there. It's a new feeling. I can't wait to get back into pads, hang around the guys and go out there and hit somebody."
On expectations for this season:
A bowl game. I want to play in a bowl game and not go home after we play Purdue.
Freshman Linebacker Matt Lewis
On reporting to camp:
"I'm excited. It's my first opportunity to show the coaches the things I can do and show them I can compete at the next level. I'm ready to make an impact right away."
On meeting his teammates:
"I met a lot of the guys on my recruiting visit and after being here early. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the freshmen and getting to know those guys."
Freshman Defensive Lineman Neal Jones
On reporting to camp:
"I'm really excited going to camp, especially with this being my first camp. I feel comfortable with the coaches, and I have met a lot of the players."
On what to expect at camp:
"I'm just going to take it one day at a time, learn what I can, stay healthy, get ready for the season and look for some wins."
On meeting his teammates:
"I know all of the Florida guys, and I'm ready to meet everyone else. There is a positive attitude all over Bloomington about this football team, so I'm ready to go at it."
