Indiana Women's Golf Releases 2005-06 Schedule

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team's 2005-06 schedule is highlighted by hosting two tournaments, including the 2006 Big Ten Championships, as announced by head coach Clint Wallman. The schedule also includes trips to Puerto Rico, Arizona and Las Vegas, among other places.
"We are very excited about this season's schedule," Wallman said. "I think this schedule has a great balance of tournaments. With us hosting the conference championship, I think it is important to build a schedule so we, as a team, are peaking at the right time.
Along with the league championship, the Hoosiers will also host the Lady Northern Invitational on the IU Championship Golf Course. The Lady Northern will be played Sept. 24-25, 2005 and serves as a preview of the Big Ten Championships. The Big Ten title then will be fought for April 28-30, 2006.
Along with the Lady Northern, Indiana's fall schedule includes the Notre Dame Invitational (Sept. 10-11), Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18), Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 10-11) and Lady Lion Invitational (Oct. 15-16).
The spring schedule is highlighted by a pair of road trips, as the Hoosiers travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue Feb. 24-25, and Rio Verde, Ariz., for the Rio Verde Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan March 2-4.
Other spring tournaments include the UNLV Spring Invitational (March 13-15), Illini Spring Invitational (April 14-15) and Lady Buckeye Invitational (April 22-23) prior to Big Tens.
"The Lady Northern and Shootout at the Legends are great barometers of where we will be as a team," Wallman said. "Then the Lady Puerto Rico and a few of our spring tournaments teams us up against some of the better teams in the country."
The Hoosiers return all but two members of last season's team, including three of the team's top four leaders in strokes.
Leading the list of returnees for the upcoming season will be senior Molly Redfearn, who finished her third consecutive year of playing at least 25 rounds. Redfearn led IU in five of the 10 tournaments played throughout the season, including a 12th-place finish in the 2005 Big Ten Championships - her best career finish at the conference championship. She also had a career-best tournament in the fall at the Mary Fossum Shootout (Sept. 18-19). While there, the Racine, Wis., native carded a 226 to tie for second overall, which was the best finish in her three-year career. Throughout the year, she led the team in stroke average (80.21), top-20 finishes (2) and had the lowest 36-hole total (150) and 54-hole total (226).
Another IU golfer expected to make an impact in the future is sophomore Elaine Harris. The San Francisco, Calif., native showed the signs of hard work and dedication to her game with her improvement from fall to spring. In three fall events, true freshman Harris failed to finish above 60th place individually and only broke 80 on two occasions. However, she improved dramatically, leading Indiana in three of the five tournaments during the spring season. She had her best performance of the year at the Indiana Invitational, where she tied for 15th overall with a rain-shortened score of 158. She also led IU at the UNLV Spring Invitational and the Central District Invitational.
Also returning in 2005-06 as a senior will be Katie Carlson. The 2004-05 campaign marked the first time in her three-year career at Indiana in which Carlson competed in more than one tournament. Though she had seen limited action in her tenure at IU, Carlson proved to be a true competitor. She had a career-best tournament at the Kent Youel Invitational Oct. 26-27. In that tournament, Carlson established new career lows for a single round (78), a 36-hole total (159) and a 54-hole total (239).
"I think this year is a wonderful opportunity for us to host the Big Ten Championships," Wallman concluded. "With the golfers we have returning, along with the group of newcomers we have for this season, the future of Indiana golf is certainly bright."
