BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana football team hit to the practice field for the second day of preseason workouts today, exposed to drills of mechanics and footwork from the IU coaching staff. The Hoosiers, who made the official check into camp on Sunday, were able to wrap up practice with a little 7-on-7 action, while focusing primarily on footwork and stance throughout the day.
The Hoosiers sported just helmets and minimal pads in their second day, but will fully suit out for the first time on Friday, and begin two-a-days on Saturday.
Practice saw the offensive line and defensive lines improving their footwork and stances through a number of drills run by Hoosier coaches Bobby Johnson and Brian George.
Hoosier offensive units also acclimated themselves to the IU playbook, running a scheme of drills that gave all four Hoosier quarterbacks a look at each of the different offensive routes.
The practice then moved to 7-on-7 workouts that saw the play of the defense line shine against the Hoosier offense.
Making notable plays were juniors Jake Powers and Troy Grosfield who posted interceptions against the Hoosier offensive sets. Also taking advantage of the offense was freshman Jammie Kirlew who recorded a fumble recovery during the action.
While the defense shined, the offense made no mistake in connecting on multiple passing routes. Highlighting the offensive play was Rhett Kleinschmidt, senior wide receiver, who in a long passing route made a diving catch to pull the ball in as he finished the route's completion on the turf.
The practice also debuted the continual improvement of freshmen Paul Haan and Andrew Means who put on a show against the Hoosier defense. In the one-on-one portion of practice, the two saw catches against the likes of crimson jerseys as they ran forward and inside cut routes to display their athletic ability.
Notable player updates have freshman Todd Newman moving to defensive tackle, while senior Courtney Clency will move back to secondary from wide receiver.
Indiana returns to the practice field on Wednesday afternoon for its third practice of the fall, and its first in shoulder pads.
