NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Junior forward Jacob Peterson put on a scoring display to lead the two-time defending national champion and consensus No. 1 Indiana men's soccer team on the final day of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. In a 5-0 domination of Boston University, Peterson notched his second career hat trick as the Hoosiers improved 3-0-1.
"I thought the boys responded well after Friday night," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "Boston was a tired and injured team, and we took advantage of that with our speed and fitness. We did a good job of jumping on top early, and I was pleased that we were able to maintain our play in the late stages."
The last time the Hoosiers scored five goals in a game was Nov. 30, 2003. In the third round of the NCAA Tournament, IU beat Virginia Commonwealth, 5-0, at Armstrong Stadium. Indiana dominated the match, outshooting BU, 23-2. The Hoosiers established controlled early and finished the first half, outshooting Boston, 10-2. IU put eight of those first-half attempts on frame and 14 for the match.
In the 14th minute, freshman Lee Nguyen set up a reoccurring theme in the opening half. After gaining possession in the midfield, the Richardson, Texas, native set a leading pass to Peterson that set up a 1-on-1 situation. Boston University goalkeeper Zach Riffett was up to the task, coming out to stone Peterson's chance.
The All-Big Ten forward from a season ago got redemption less than a minute later. Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin sent a though-ball to Peterson, who beat the goalkeeper to the left corner on a 1-v-1.
The pair hooked up again in the 27th minute. Plotkin sent a centering cross from the right flank. Peterson was there on the receiving end, heading home his second goal of the match from three yards out.
Indiana had numerous other chances to add to its advantage. In the 22nd minute, Nguyen sent a volley toward the net from 18 yards out that was saved by the goalkeeper. The play was set up by a nice series of passing from junior midfielder Josh Tudela and Peterson.
Two minutes later, Peterson again broke free on the left side. The Portage, Mich., native beat the keeper on the left. He sent a cut back pass to Nguyen at the six, but his attempt was lifted high.
After scoring his second goal at 26:42, Peterson narrowly missed a first-half hat trick. Nguyen found Peterson up the left side that set up a one-on-one, but Riffett was able to stifle the attempt.
Peterson would get the hat trick in the second half, finishing it off in the 58th minute. Tudela sent a pass back to the left, Peterson carried it toward the center at the 18. He unleashed a shot to toward the lower left corner that beat the BU goalkeeper.
For Peterson, it was his second career hat trick and gave him four goals on the weekend. The trio of markers was the 48th hat trick in school history. Peterson accomplished the feat during the 2004 season against Michigan State on Sept. 26, in a 3-1 victory.
"Jake is a special player," Freitag said. "He did an excellent job of finding seams in the defense, and then he was able to put away some shots. Jake had an impressive tournament and it is good to see him find the scoring touch early in the season."
Five minute later, Peterson almost became the first Hoosier since Ken Snow in 1989 to record four markers in a game. After Tudela had a shot blocked, it found the waiting head of Peterson, but his header was pushed wide by the Boston University goalkeeper.
Less than a minute later, the Hoosiers made it 4-0. Redshirt freshman Kevin Noschang made an impressive run up the right side. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native cut back toward goal and sent a centering pass to the six. The BU keeper got a hand on it, but the ball found the waiting foot of Plotkin, who poked it into the net from a yard out. For the match, Plotkin finished with a goal and two assists.
In the 84th minute, redshirt freshman forward Billy Weaver notched his first career goal. After a nice dish from junior Kevin Robson, Weaver attempted to slip a shot past the BU goalkeeper. The initial shot was blocked to the right by the keeper, before the Lake Orion, Mich., native corralled the deflection and sent it into the upper part of the net.
A trio of Hoosiers were named to the Mike Berticelli Memorial All-Tournament Team. Peterson and Plotkin were both selected along with sophomore back Greg Stevning.
Indiana will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Oregon State Diadora Classic. On Friday, the Hoosiers open up against No. 29 (College Soccer News) Cal State-Northridge at 1 p.m. PT. The following day IU will face the host Beavers at 3 p.m. PT.
