Bashore Named IU Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending Sept. 11, senior women's field hockey player Kayla Bashore is the second Hoosier to garner this distinction.
In Friday's dominating 6-0 win over Pacific, Bashore's three goals were good enough for the Hoosiers' second hat trick in program history.
Bashore, who was the game's only scorer in the first half, was recently named to the USA Field Hockey National Team. Last weekend's outstanding performance placed Bashore at the top of the single-game goals and points records list. Bashore has scored four goals in 2005 and is IU's career leader in shots.
"After playing with the national team last week, Kayla only had one game to prepare for this week," head coach Amy Robertson said. "She has really stepped up strong this season and this is a great honor for her."
Bashore earned the Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list of nominees included sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner (field hockey), sophomore back Greg Stevning (men's soccer), junior forward Jacob Peterson (men's soccer), redshirt freshman wide receiver James Hardy (football), senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski (women's soccer), senior defender Courtney O'Bryan (women's soccer), senior Shannon Johnson (women's golf) and freshman outside hitter Erica Short (volleyball).
Hoosier Honor Roll Sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner (field hockey) - recorded a game-high seven saves off Pacific's seven shots on goal.
Sophomore back Greg Stevning (men's soccer) - selected to the Mike Berticelli Memorial all tournament team.
Junior forward Jacob Peterson (men's soccer) - recorded second career hat trick against Boston University.
Freshman wide receiver James Hardy (football) - had eight catches for 122 yards including one for the winning touchdown.
Senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski (women's soccer) - recorded two goals in the Hoosier Classic and named to all-tournament team.
Senior defender Courtney O'Bryan (women's soccer) - led a Hoosiers defense that held Xavier to only eight shots in Indiana's 3-1 win.
Senior Shannon Johnson (women's golf) - in her first match as a Hoosiers, won the Notre Dame Invitational with a score of 72, 76 and 75 respectively.
Freshman outside hitter Erica Short (volleyball) - recorded 49 kills and 13 blocks in the three matches.
