Indiana Heads West for Oregon State Diadora Classic

Bloomington, Ind. - The two-time defending national champion and No. 1 Indiana men's soccer team will travel to Corvallis, Ore., for the Oregon State Diadora Classic. The Hoosiers will open with No. 16 (Soccer America) Cal State-Northridge at 1 p.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 16, followed by a Sunday affair with host Oregon State at 3 p.m. PT.
The weekend will be the first time Indiana has played at Oregon State. In 2004, the Hoosiers defeated the Beavers, 3-1, in the final game of the adidas/IU Crecit Union Classic. Indiana has never faced the Matadors of Cal State-Northridge.
Hoosier News and Notes
- Indiana is currently riding a nine-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season. The Hoosiers finished the 2004 season, winning five straight matches to claim the national championship. In 2005, IU is 3-0-1 in its opening four matches. IU had a 23-match unbeaten streak that stretched from the final 18 matches of the 2003 season and the first five of the 2004 season.
- The Hoosiers are averaging 4,214 fans per game at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers' overall attendance for the year is 8,428 in two home affairs.
- Indiana is ranked No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association.
- Junior forward Jacob Peterson currently ranks among the Hoosier top 25 in two career categories. He is tied for 24th on the career goals list with 22 during his three-year career. Peterson needs one goal to move into a tie with Pete Stoyanovich for 23rd. He also is 23rd with 141 career shots. The Portage, Mich., native needs four more attempts to move into 22nd.
- Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin ranks among the IU all-time top 25 in two categories as well. He is tied for 16th in assists with 27 career helpers. With his next assist, he will move into a tie for 14th place, currently shared by Ken Snow and Steve Burks. Plotkin ranks 13th on IU's career shots list, trailing 12th place by four attempts.
- Senior Mike Ambersley ranks among IU's top 25 in career shots. He is 25th with 130 career attempts and trails 24th place Chad Deering by seven shots.
- Junior forward Jacob Peterson record his second career hat trick and 48th in the Hoosier annals. Against Boston University on Sept. 11, he notched the first three goals of the match in a 5-0 victory. Peterson became the 10th Hoosier in school history to record multiple hat tricks in a career.
Big Ten Rankings
A number of Hoosiers rank among the top 10 in the Big Ten Conference in different categories. In fact, IU leads the Big Ten in every major team category through the first two weeks of the regular season. Here is a look at how the Hoosiers fare in the conference rankings:

Scouting Cal State-NorthRidge
Cal State-Northridge is 3-0-1 on the season following a 1-0 victory over Stanford and a 1-1 tie with then-No. 8 California at the adidas/Cal Legacy Classic. In their opening four matches, the Matadors have only allowed one goal on the season.
Cal State-Northridge opened the season by winning the Matador Soccer Invitational. In the invite, the host defeated Oakland, 4-0, and Dartmouth, 3-0.
The Matadors are led by junior Willie Sims. He has 10 points on the season with four goals and two assists. After earning MVP honors at the Matador Classic, Sims was named the Big West Player of the Week. He also was a third team College Soccer News Preseason All-American. Sims is the two-time reigning Big West Co-Offensive Player of the Year.
Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Guppy has started all four games between the pipes for the Matadors. He has every decision for Cal State-Northridge with two shutouts and 14 saves. Guppy has a goals against average of 0.25.
Cal State-Northridge was picked preseason No. 2 in the Big West behind defending conference champion and NCAA runner-up UC-Santa Barbara. In the polls, the Matadors are ranked 16th in Soccer America, 22nd in College Soccer News and 27th in Top Drawer Soccer.
Scouting Oregon State
The Hoosiers and Beavers will meet for the second time in two seasons at the Diadora Classic. Oregon State enters the classic at 1-2-2 on the season, after going 1-0-1 at the OSU Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Classic. On Friday, Sept. 9, the Beavers knocked off Iona, 1-0, before tying Kentucky, 2-2. OSU also has tied UC-Davis, 1-1, and lost to St. Mary's, 1-0, and Sacramento State, 2-1.
Senior defender Alex Asai leads the Beavers with four points on one goal and two assists. Oregon State's top returning player from a season ago is junior forward Robbie Findley, who was a third team NSCAA All-West Region and first team All-Pac-10 selection in 2004.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Packy Deenihan has started four of the five matches in goal for OSU. He owns a 1-1-2 mark with a shutout and 28 saves. Deenihan also has a goals against average of 0.90.
4,000-plus Back-to-Back Home Attendance
The Hoosiers racked up two straight home games with back-to-back attendance of over 4,000 during the 2005 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 2 and 4. It marked the third time in school history that the Hoosiers had back-to-back home matches of over 4,000 and it was the fourth highest two-match total in the school annals. It is also the third-largest two-day total crowd in adidas/IU Credit Union Classic history. Here are the top two-match attended totals in school history:

Hoosiers on FSC
Indiana will be part of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) College Soccer Game of the Week television package. The Hoosiers Sept. 30 tilt with Big Ten rival Penn State on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium will be televised live on FSC as part of the eight-game Friday night package. Over the past eight years, the Hoosiers are 12-3 on television, playing games on CSTV, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports Net and CN8: The Comcast Net.
"Indiana University Soccer is excited to be a part of the Fox Soccer Channel and NSCAA television package," Indiana head coach Mike Frietag said. "College soccer is a great product, and we are happy that it is going to be on television. This opportunity will give people a chance to see the quality of soccer that the college ranks has to offer. They also will see the number of talented players."
The Indiana/Penn State matchup will be the third College Soccer Game of the Week telecast on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. CT. The 2004 game between the conference foes was broadcast on CN8: The Comcast Net, which IU won, 2-1, in Happy Valley.
The match up figures to be a good one, with four of the last five clashes between the two schools being decided by one goal. IU is 3-1-1 in its last five matches against the Nittany Lions with the lone tie coming in the Big Ten Tournament Championship match in 2003. Indiana claimed the title 4-1 on penalty kicks.
Sean Wheelock, a veteran of Major League Soccer broadcasts and other MLS programming, including the MLS SuperDraft, will serve as the primary announcer for each game.
The NSCAA and Fox Soccer Channel have hired Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cultural Videos Communications to handle the live production of all eight games. Cultural Videos' executive producer David Bolton will serve as producer/director for all of the college soccer on Fox Soccer Channel broadcasts.
