BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team begins action for the 2005-06 season at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., Sept. 16-18. IU's four freshmen, Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller, along with four returnees, Pam Gesellchen, Nikki Hein, Cecile Perton and Brianna Williams, are expected to have strong matches against solid Midwest competition.
"We will be leaving our top-three players from last year home because they will be playing the All-American Championships in October," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "This will give all our other returning players and our four new players a chance to move up into the top flights and get better competition. We are looking forward to seeing how our new players adjust to college tennis."
Schools participating in this year's tournament include Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Marquette, Minnesota, University of Illinois-Chicago and Western Michigan. The Hoosiers, who were top competitors in last year's tournament, notched 16 combined wins in both singles and doubles matches.
