BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team will continue its homestand this weekend with a pair of matches against Butler, Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., followed by Bowling Green on Sunday, Sept. 18, at noon. The Hoosiers (2-3-1) are coming off a 1-1 weekend at the inaugural Hoosier Classic, and look to extend its confidence win streak before starting conference play.
"It was nice to play at home after such a long road schedule," head coach Mick Lyon said. "It is nice to be in front of a home crowd. These games will give us a chance to make another step forward in the right direction before we begin Big Ten play."
Indiana will conclude its non-conference schedule this weekend before opening Big Ten action on the road against Penn State on Friday, Sept. 23, followed by a contest against Minnesota Sunday, Sept. 25.
•HEAD COACH Mick Lyon's PREVIEW FOR BUTLER•
"Friday's game against Butler is a huge game for them," head coach Mick Lyon said. "It is a chance for them to beat a big school down the road. Butler finished as its conference champion last year in the Horizon League and will bring a good team that we have to be ready for. We have to make sure and match the intensity they will bring from the start. They have a good group of women, and have the possibility to give us some problems if we do not come out strong and look to set the pace of the game from the onset of the first whistle."
•HEAD COACH Mick Lyon's PREVIEW FOR BOWLING GREEN•
"They are extremely well coached," head coach Mick Lyon said. "They will have a well organized and prepared team that will come out ready to play. We need to dictate the tone of the game and dominate like we did against Xavier on both ends of the field."
•LAST TIME OUT•
The Indiana women's soccer team closed the inaugural Hoosier Classic in dominating fashion by dismissing the Xavier Musketeers, 3-1. From the first whistle of the game, Indiana (2-3-1) had Xavier on its heels, posting two shots within the first minute, forecasting the final shot advantage of 22 to 8 in favor of the Hoosiers.
From the onset of the first touch of the ball the Hoosiers controlled of the match, holding the Musketeers to eight shots on the day, and just three in the first half. The Hoosiers, on the other hand, showed a balanced attack firing 11 shots in both periods.
The Hoosiers notched the game's first goal at the 19:23 mark, as senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski booted in her second goal of the season in the left side of the net. The goal got the assist from sophomore forward Kristin Radcliffe, who blasted in a shot from 10-yards out that was blocked by Xavier's goalie freshman Ashley Donaldson. The shot brought the goalie to the ground, opening the net for Zmijewski off the rebound for the game's first score.
Zmijewski's two goals over the weekend also earned the Aurora, Ill., native a ticket on the all-tournament team, posting a total of four shots, with three on goal during the Classic.
Indiana was not done for the half knocking in its second goal in the 27th minute of action, this time from Radcliffe from the right wing. The Wheaton, Ill., native also found the left corner of the goal, as junior Carrie DeFreece sent the pass in to pick up her first assist in the 2005 campaign. Radcliffe netted her first season goal after chipping the shot over the charging Musketeer goalie to give the Hoosiers the 2-0 cushion.
Xavier cut into the IU lead, marking its best drive on the match at the 30th minute. Senior midfielder Angie Scarlato snuck past the IU defense to net the unassisted goal past a diving senior goalie Lauren Fabbro for the Hoosiers.
It was all IU from there, as sophomore Katy Stewart ended the scoring accolades for the day, notching her first career and season goal in the 52nd minute. Stewart received help from two-pairs of Hoosier feet, as touch passes from freshmen Molly Beckwith and Ashley Seib setup the Bloomington, Ind., native for the score. Stewart found an open net at the end of the two assists, sending the ball in the center of the net to give the game its final score, 3-1.
Xavier's struggled on offense due to the Hoosier defense, led by the hands of senior goalie Lauren Fabbro, who collected seven saves in the victory, playing all 90 minutes in goal for IU.
Senior Courtney O'Bryan, who guided the Indiana defensive unit, earned all-tournament honors with her performance over the weekend carding 165 minutes of action. The defensive unit of seniors Robin Barker and O'Bryan, junior Ali Brown and sophomore Beverly Markwort also joined together to limit the second fewest shots in a match this season with eight allowed.
Wrapping up the Hoosier notables were 11 Hoosiers chiming in on the shot chart, with freshman Molly Kruger (6) and Radcliffe (4) leading the charge. Also posting shots on the day were senior Zmijewski (2), junior forward Megan Pipkens (2) and sophomore defender Jenna Babcock, Barker, Beckwith, junior Lauren Dieter and sophomore forwards Suzie Teixeira and Lindsay McCarthy all with one to their names.
•SCOUTING BUTLER•
The Hoosiers' record against the Bulldogs is 6-5-1, as Indiana has defeated Butler six of the last seven times the two have met. The other match ended in a 1-1 tie. Butler opened the series with the Hoosiers with a 5-0 advantage, but has gone on to lose or tie the next seven, with its last victory against IU coming in 1997. The Bulldogs also have yet to net a goal against the Hoosiers since tying 1-1 on October 5, 1999, in Indianapolis. Indiana has out-scored the Bulldogs 13-1 in their last seven encounters.
Butler continued its win streak in its last outing against Indiana State, 1-0, getting another goal from freshman Angie Muir and another shutout from sophomore Annalise Larkin in its victory in Terre Haute, Ind. Senior Meredith Buemi assisted on the lone goal of the game, as the Bulldogs won their third straight to improve to 3-2 on the year.
•SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN•
The Falcons come to town for the second time to meet the Hoosiers, while Sunday's matchup is the third overall meeting between the two teams. Indiana has never dropped a match to Bowling Green and holds a 9-0 goal advantage against the Falcons who have yet to pass a Hoosier goalie.
The Falcons downed visiting Eastern Illinois in overtime at Cochrane Field in their last matchup. Senior Leah Eggleton scored the winning goal with less than a minute to go in overtime, to give BG the win. Classmate Samantha Meister scored the Falcons' first goal of the day, and added an assist on Eggleton's winner. With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-3-0 on the season, hoping to make the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year after making an appearance in 2004.
•REUNION•
Erika Flanders, who joined the Hoosier coaching staff in 2005, enters her first year as goalie coach for IU. Sunday's game against visiting Bowling Green will be the first time the Mason, Ohio, native has faced her alma mater wearing the Cream and Crimson.
Flanders wrapped up her career at Bowling Green as the team captain her senior year, finishing her BG campaign holding every school goalkeeping record (single-match, season and career) known in the book.
•THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME•
The Hoosiers look capitalize off their next two home matches with a win before starting Big Ten play on the road at Penn State Sept. 23. The Hoosiers are coming off a 1-1 performance at the Hoosier Classic, and look to increase the season's win record to four after battling Butler this Friday, and Bowling Green on Sunday.
•GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY•
It was the freshmen duo of Molly Beckwith and Molly Kruger who teamed up together to notch the Hoosiers' first goal of the season against Iowa State (9/11). The feat came in the 37th minute of action against the Cyclones, as Beckwith moved toward the goal, collecting a dish from Kruger to knock the ball in for Beckwith and Kruger's first collegiate goal and assist, respectively. IU, which had gone scoreless in its first four contests, could not be denied in its offensive domination of Iowa State, posting a 13 to four shot advantage.
•DIRECTING THE TROOPS•
Senior Kristen Zmijewski was named the 2005 team captain for the Hoosiers and has taken the role to heart. As an on- and off-the-field leader, Zmijewski has led the Hoosiers to a 2-3-1 record on the season, while scoring two of IU's five goals in 2005.
Zmijewski earned all-tournament honors at Indiana's inaugural Hoosier Classic, notching a goal in each of the Hoosiers matches against Miami (Fla.) and Xavier. The senior is currently tied as IU's point leader with freshman Molly Beckwith (One goal, two assists) with four points to her name. Zmijewski's two goals over the weekend also earns the senior a place on the career-goals list in the IU record book, coming in at No. 10 with 10 goals.
•WHO'S THAT SEIB•
Freshman Ashley Seib has made an immediate impact on the stats sheet, posting two shots, each of which were on goal in her first two collegiate matches. While the freshman has yet to start in the Hoosier lineup, her play off the bench has made her a deadly threat at forward.
The Evansville, Ind., native has wasted no time in creating a problem for the opposing defense in her 106 minutes of play. During her on-field action against Xavier, Seib joined with freshman Molly Beckwith to setup Katy Stewart for a goal in the Hoosier's 3-1 victory against the Musketeers. The feat marks the freshman's first career point and assist.
•SHUTTING OUT THE COMPETITION•
The Hoosiers have twice shut out an opponent in the 2005 campaign, the first coming in a 0-0 tie against Loyola Marymount in the season opener, followed by the most recent against Iowa State in a 1-0 victory.
•GOING THE DISTANCE•
Senior Robin Barker, junior Lauren Lamping and sophomore Beverly Markwort have all seen a substantial amount of playing time in the early goings of 2005. Barker has recorded 450, Lamping 445, while Markwort is close behind with 391 minutes out of a possible 470.
The three, along with senior Courtney O'Bryan (300) and sophomore Jenna Babcock (289) make up a defensive corps that has shut out two opponents, and limited Xavier to only eight shots in the Hoosier's last matchup. The Musketeers are the same team that reeled off seven shots and a goal against then-No.18 Marquette in the first match of the Hoosier Classic, taking the Golden Eagles into overtime before dropping the contest 2-1.
•FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH•
Freshman Molly Beckwith and Molly Kruger have teamed together to be two of IU's most talented feet on the field. Beckwith currently is tied with senior Kristen Zmijewski in points, with four, while Kruger has tallied an assist and leads all Hoosiers with 16 shots, and is tied for most shots on goal with five.
Kruger has started every match for Indiana at the midfield position, while Beckwith has remained a solid of-the-bench player at the forward, registering just 181 minutes of action.
•HOOSIER HONORS•
Seniors Kristen Zmijewski and Courtney O'Bryan represented the Indiana Hoosiers on the 11-player Hoosier Classic All-Tournament team, after leading IU to a 1-1 record over at the Classic. Zmijewski, a midfielder, and O'Bryan a defender, make the first ever all-tournament list as IU hosted the inaugural Classic inviting then-ranked No.18 Marquette, Miami (Fla.) and Xavier for the event. Marquette took home the tournament title with a 2-0 record, while Miami (1-1) finished second, followed by Indiana (1-1) and Xavier (0-2) in third and fourth.
