IU Softball Heads to Chicago

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team, led by head coach Stacey Phillips, has three scheduled tournaments on tap for the fall. IU, which does not begin its spring season until Feb.17-19 at the Oklahoma Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla., will use the fall schedule to glove where the team is offensively and defensively.
First up for the Hoosiers, the Chicagoland Fall Classic in Chicago, Ill., Sept. 16-18. The team will face Lewis, Bradley, Illinois-Chicago, Olivet Nazarene and DePaul over the course of the weekend.
Up first for the Hoosiers on Friday, Sept. 16, is Lewis at 5 p.m., followed by Bradley at 7 p.m. Saturday, IU hits the diamond for two more games against Illinois-Chicago and Olivet Nazarene at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. The Hoosiers will wrap up the tournament with a contest against DePaul on Sunday at 10 p.m.
"This weekend will be a great time to get back on the field against some good competition and see where we are at," Phillips said. "The fall gives the coaching staff a chance to see what we need to focus on. Also, it is a fine opportunity for the newcomers to get all the freshmen jitters out of the way and don the Cream and Crimson for the first time."
The Hoosiers are ready to begin a new chapter in IU softball, looking to bring a positive attitude into the 2006 season. The team will debut four freshmen, while returning three seniors to the squad.
"Everyone has worked very hard in practice and there has been an upbeat attitude since the women hit the field and weight room for preseason," Phillips said. "The mentality of the team this year is nothing but positive, something that has greatly improved from a year ago. This team is ready to work hard and wants to improve in every area of the game, which is something as a coach you love to see."
