KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Indiana women's tennis team opened the 2005-06 campaign with a solid day at Western Michigan's Bronco Invitational. All four of IU's newcomers notched their first wins as Hoosiers in Kalamazoo.
In singles, Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller proved they belong in the Cream and Crimson. In the flight "A" singles bracket, Berdala defeated Ball State's Retter, 6-0, 6-1, Calvo overcame a 3-6 loss in the first set to beat Minnesota's Bugaenco, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) and Fisher was victorious over Watkins from Western Michigan, 6-2, 6-1. Heller, who compete in the "B" bracket was victorious as well with a win over Marquette's Nguyen, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(6).
In the day's doubles play, the Hoosier pairs took on both Marquette and Western Michigan. Against Marquette, Fischer and senior Cecile Perton and sophomore Nikki Hein and Heller both won in the three match series. Against the host Broncos, Fischer and Perton were victorious again, 8-2.
