Women's Team Takes Home Intercollegiates Title

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- In the 67th running of the annual Indiana Intercollegiates, the Hoosier women claimed the title, while the men took a second-place finish overall. For the women, it was their second title in three years, while the men came up just short in earning their fifth-straight crown.
The afternoon got started with the open run (5k for women, 8k for men) with freshman Amanda Vanwanzeele of Purdue claiming the women's title with a time of 20:13, and freshman Jared Messmann of Indiana State clocking in at 26:37.
In the women's 5k, senior Heather Cooksey of Southern Indiana was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 17:46. For Indiana, freshman Wendi Robinson turned in an impressive performance, as she finished fourth overall, the highest for the IU women with a career-best time of 18:16. Seniors Kelly Siefker and Larra Overton were right on her heels, finishing seventh (18:23) and 11th (18:30), respectively. Lindsay Hattendorf rounded also finished in the top 20 as she came in 14th-place (18:44).
Head Coach Judy Wilson was excited the Hoosiers claimed their second title in three years.
"It was a nice first race for us to run as a team," Wilson said. "We did very well, considering we ran without Jess (Gall). This was great for Wendi to come out and shine in her own home state."
Robinson, a Danville, Ind., product said it felt good to compete in the first competitive race of her career.
"I was nervous at first," Robinson said. "I was really happy with my time. It felt great to represent IU and I am excited with how well our team did."
The Indiana women will be back in action next weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24 in Minneapolis, Minn.
