BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball squad fell to 4-5 on the season after struggling against Western Michigan in IU's first match of the TIS Bookstore Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., at the University Gym on Sept. 16. Overall, the Hoosiers could not hold onto any momentum they snatched throughout the contest, and the Broncos took advantage with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-27) win.
"We just did not control our side of the ball tonight," Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Western Michigan is a very good team, but we struggled offensively throughout the entire match. We had been playing much better than that recently and just were not communicating tonight."
Freshman middle blocker Erica Short led the Hoosiers with 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Annie Moddrell finished just behind her with 10 putaways. Additionally, Moddrell paced IU with a .316 hitting clip. Meanwhile, freshman setter Laura Holm led the IU attack with 29 assists. Indiana's other double-digit performance came from junior libero Sara Diehl's 10 digs.
In the first frame, the Hoosiers stormed out of the locker room to a 6-1 lead, but could not hold on as Western Michigan powered to a 30-24 victory to take a 1-0 lead. In sum, the game featured seven ties and three lead changes.
Western Michigan maintained its momentum with a 30-26 win to stretch the lead to 2-0, even though Indiana found its way defensively by holding the Broncos to just .171 hitting.
Unfortunately, Indiana could not find a foothold as the Hoosiers fell 30-27 in a tightly-contested third stanza with 11 ties and four lead changes. That effort closed out the match for the Broncos.
In earlier action, Dayton dismissed Arkansas State, 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-26).
Indiana returns to action tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m., match against Arkansas State at the University Gym.
