BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 12 Indiana field hockey team improved its record to 5-1 today in Mellencamp Pavilion with a 4-1 win over Ohio. Despite a defensive stalemate for most of first period, Indiana was able to overcome the Bobcats offensively once junior Lydia Schrott got rolling.
The first period's defensive battle was finally broken in the 23rd minute when Schott notched her sixth goal of the season off a wide open shot in the middle of the circle.
With the score at 1-0 at the half, the Hoosiers kept up the momentum with another score from Schrott off an assist from senior Nikki Orciuch in the 42nd minute. Two minutes later, Orciuch added some assurance to the Indiana lead by scoring off a penalty corner.
In the 60th minute, Bobcat forward Lindsay Rothenberger netted the first and only score for Ohio. A penalty corner at the game's end resulted in another IU score. Junior Morgan Miller notched her second score of the game off the assist from Mallory Reabold.
For the game, the Hoosiers outshot the Bobcats 15-6, and sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner notched three saves in IU's second straight win at home.
"Overall, it was a little tougher of a win than we would have liked," Schrott said. "They pressed us hard, but we were able to keep our focus. I don't think we played 70 minutes of Indiana hockey, but it's a win and now we need to focus on Missouri State."
The Hoosiers continue their five-game home stand with Missouri State tomorrow at 1 p.m.
