EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana senior transfer Shannon Johnson is tied for sixth overall with a 4-over par 148 after the first day of the Mary Fossum Invitational here Saturday. Johnson, who earned co-medalist honors at last weekend's Notre Dame Invitational, carded a pair of 74's on the afternoon, including six birdies during the two rounds.
"Shannon continues to prove she belongs among the nation's elite," Wallman said. "She had one bad hole out of 36 on the day and I look for her to be right in the thick of things on Sunday."
As a team, the Hoosiers are in 15th overall, with a 640 (322-318) on the Forest Akers West golf course. Tournament host Michigan State leads the field with a 594 (299-295), followed by SMU, which is one stroke behind at 595 (294-301). Northwestern had the best team round of the day with a second-round 292. They totaled 598 (306-292) and sit in third place. Defending champion Michigan compiled a first-day score of 613 (309-304) and is in eighth place.
"I thought we hit the ball well and our greens in regulation was much better," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said referring to the team's season-low round of 318 shot in the second 18 holes of the day. We had a couple of holes that hurt us, but I am optimistic going into Sunday."
Sophomore Elaine Harris closed the day in a tie for 66th overall with a 162 (83-79). True freshman Amber Lindgren follows closely behind with a 165 (84-81) and is tied for 70th. Senior Katie Carlson (72nd) and sophomore Kendal Hake (79th) round out Indiana.
The Hoosiers will compete in the 18-hole final round on Sunday, beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The conclusion of the tournament can be followed live on golfstat.com.
