BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending, Sept. 18, senior running back Chris Taylor earned the honor.
In Saturday's dominating 38-14 win over Kentucky, Taylor's career-high 176 yards helped the Hoosiers to their first 3-0 start since 1994. Additionally, the win moved head coach Terry Hoeppner to 3-0 at the helm of IU. Amazingly, the last head coach to debut with three consecutive triumphs came in 1905 with James Sheldon roaming the sidelines.
Notably, Indiana is one of only five teams in the Big Ten and 25 teams nationally to open up 2005 with a 3-0 record.
Meanwhile, Taylor's rushing total is the first time a Hoosier has eclipsed the 150-yard mark since BenJarvus Green-Ellis rumbled for 155 yards against Purdue on Nov. 22, 2003.
"Chris is one of our captains and has shown great leadership throughout the season," Hoeppner said. "We challenged our running backs to set the tone early against Kentucky, and Chris is one of many players who answered that call. This is a tremendous honor for him, and I am really proud of Chris."
Taylor earned the Athlete of the Week honor from a list of deserving nominees. The list included senior defender Robin Barker (women's soccer), freshman forward Lee Nguyen (men's soccer), senior Eric Redman (men's cross country), freshman Wendi Robinson (women's cross country), freshman middle blocker Erica Short (volleyball) and junior forward Lydia Schrott (field hockey).
Hoosier Honor Roll
Senior defender Robin Barker (women's soccer) - only Hoosier to notch points in both wins over the weekend.
Freshman forward Lee Nguyen (men's soccer) - posted six points at the Oregon State Diadora Classic with two assists and two goals.
Senior Eric Redman (men's cross country) - turned in the highest performance for the Hoosiers and the Big Ten at the Indiana Intercollegiates for second place.
Freshman Wendi Robinson (women's cross country) - placed fifth at the Indiana Intercollegiates to lead IU to its second title in three years.
Freshman middle blocker Erica Short (volleyball) - led IU with 52 kills for a 2-1 record and second place in the TIS Bookstore Invitational. Also posted two block solos and 11 block assists.
Junior forward Lydia Schrott (field hockey) - continues to lead IU and the Big Ten in scoring. Tallied two goals against Ohio in the 4-1 win.
