HATO MAYER, Dominican Republic-- Cyndi Valentin and the Puerto Rican National team wrapped up action at the 2005 FIBA Americas Championships with a fifth-place finish overall, just missing the cut to qualify for the 2006 World Championships. During Saturday's action, Puerto Rico lost a heartbreaker to the Canadian National team, 83-81, and then fell to Argentina, 91-73 on Sunday. Valentin finished the five-game series averaging 13.4 points per game.
Against Canada, Valentin notched 18 points and five rebounds. Puerto Rico seeked revenge on Canada, who had beaten them three times earlier in the series, but came up just short as the Canadians won the game and qualified for the 2006 World Championships on a last second shot by Teresa Kleindienst.
Sunday's battle between Puerto Rico and Argentina was a hard-fought game for the last spot to qualify for the World Championships. Valentin scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds in the loss.
