Hoosiers Off to a Good Start

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team hit the ground running at the season's first tournament. The Hoosiers, who have their eyes set on their 24th NCAA Tournament appearance, proved they are a Midwest power and will be a strong team in the spring.
Highlighting the season's first tournament was outstanding play by IU's four newcomers. Alba Berdala, Marah Calvo, Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller proved they are ready to be Hoosiers. Along with the freshmen, Indiana head coach Lin Loring sent junior Cecile Perton, sophomores Pam Gesellchen and Nikki Hein.
In singles competition, Berdala was unstoppable and claimed the Flight "A" singles crown. Berdala was victorious over Ball State's Retter, 6-0, 6-1, before beating Minnesota's Spilca, 6-2, 6-1. In the afternoon of day two, Berdala continued where she left off by defeating host Western Michigan's Parekh, 6-4, 6-1. In the final day of singles play, Berdala claimed the Flight "A" championship over Minnesota's Malmberg, 7-6, 6-2.
