Sept. 22, 2005
Before heading off to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer took time to speak with IUHOOSIERS.com about the tournament. Michigan will host the event at the University of Michigan Golf Course on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 24-25.
On sophomore Santiago Quirarte and freshman Drew Allenspach and Jorge Campillo:
"We are sending yet another young lineup, but Jorge, Santiago and Drew have really proved themselves the first two tournaments. I think our future is going to be extremely bright with those three in the lineup."
On senior Scott Seibert:
"Scott Seibert played his first event last week (Gopher Invitational - Sept. 17-18) and probably hit the ball as well as I've ever seen him hit it. It (Spring Hill Golf Club) was a tough golf course and he made some mistakes, and on that type of course you pay for your mistakes. Scott can play the U-M Golf Course. His freshman year he shot 72-72-72 at the golf course (2002 Wolverine Intercollegiate). I think he'll play well."
On freshman Brandon Pike:
"Yet another freshman in the lineup. He's played extremely well the last two weeks in qualifiers. He is working hard and has a great attitude. Brandon plays with guts and with instincts, and he has the ability to score well."
On freshman Seth Brandon:
"We have the opportunity to bring Seth, who has been playing very well as of late. Following a tough first tournament (NCAA Central Regional Preview - Sept. 12-13), he has the chance to play as an individual and get more comfortable with collegiate golf. I think it will be a big help for him."
On his expectations at the Wolverine Intercollegiate:
"We're going there (Ann Arbor) to win this golf tournament. We've played in two great fields and feel like we are ready to go and compete for a championship. That's our goal."
On the team's practice this week:
"This has been the best week of practice we have had all year. We know what we need to work on, and we've worked on it. We've singled out some players and what they need to do to improve. There is a good feel in the camp, and we feel we're ready to compete for a title."
