Overtime Goal Lifts Golden Gophers Over Indiana

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Indiana women's soccer team fell in overtime to the Minnesota Golden Gophers today, 2-1, in Minneapolis at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Freshman midfielder Molly Kruger put the Hoosiers in the lead off a feed from senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski, but the Golden Gophers equalized the game in the second half en route to their game-winning goal in overtime to surpass the visiting IU squad.
The loss drops the Hoosiers to 4-5-1, 0-2 Big Ten, while Minnesota moves to 4-4-2, 1-1 Big Ten.
"We had a lot of great chances and opportunities to put the game away in 90 minutes," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We just had some bad luck. The hustle of Minnesota is what kept them in the game and eventually gave them the easy goal in overtime."
Kruger led the offensive charge in the 32nd minute off a feed from Zmijewski. Kruger made her move from the left side of the field, collecting a pass from Zmijewski that bounced past a Minnesota defender. Kruger netted her first career goal with a shot in the far corner past Minnesota's goalie Molly Schneider. The Carmel, Ind., native reeled off seven shots in the loss, four of which found their target on goal to lead all Hoosiers in both categories.
"Molly Kruger had one of her best performances today," said Lyon. "When it came down to it, they had more energy in overtime than we did."
Minnesota's Megan Fightmaster scored in the 54th minute to balance the game at 1. UM's Kaitlin Wagner setup the equalizer with a free kick from 30 yards out to connect with Fightmaster on the header. In goal for the Golden Gophers, Schneider posted seven saves in the affair, while the Hoosiers Stacey Van Boxmeer cleared out three saves in the loss.
The final blow came on a corner kick from Minnesota's Clare Grimwood in the extra period. Minnesota's Lindsey Schwartz made first contact with the ball on a header before Kaitlin Neary finished the play with a header of her own to end the game. Schwartz and Grimwood were credited with the assist, while Neary tallied the game winner.
Indiana finished the contest in front of Minnesota in every category on the stats sheet but the score, out-shooting the Golden Gophers 18-12 and fighting to an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Junior forward Megan Pipkens helped apply Indiana's offensive pressure with two shots on goal, three overall, while Zmijewski and sophomore forward Kristin Radcliffe each had two shots of their own to wrap up the Hoosier notables.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, Sept. 30, as they host Michigan for a 4 p.m. match on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
